Clock In For Sepia Saturday

In the days before clocks you had to devise other means to tell the time:

Sundial Cottage, Kirklevington

At this university the students, including my daughter, had no excuse for being late to lectures:

Birmingham University

You may have to look hard to check the time when sight seeing in Holland:

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

It's not much clearer in this university town where my daughter spent a year:

Freiburg, Germany

But nearer home everything becomes much clearer:

Yarm Town Hall Clock (Not taken in 1710)

Clock in for more at Sepia Saturday 72

We had a big tower with a clock on it at the university I attended. I don't remember ever looking at it though. Nice collection of clocks.

There is a big clock on the tower of the courthouse in downtown Minneapolis.

Funny thing about those clocks around towns, sometimes they are really off! Ours in town didn't get changed for daylight savings time this year and was an hour behind for at least a month! Great post Bob!

In these days of cuts, nobody seems to wind the municipal clocks up any more. Time often stands still even though life moves on.

The man who winds the clock on the Town Hall lives in my village.

A great collection of photographs with clock tower theme; but my favourite is the sundial in the first picture.

Thanks for visiting my crazy blog. With all that went on there in the UK today it's hard to see how it was going to be a wedding free day. Nice try though. You have some unusual clocks in and around there. Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful tower clocks! Are you sure that last picture wasn't taken in 1710? Perhaps it was in 1711 then - and in color no less.

I fear the towers of the future will contain digital LED clocks. The beauty will be gone.

I don't think I'd be able to tell time from that sun dial! Looks very complicated.

We had a sundial in our yard as children. My parents thought it was a neat thing and we loved being able to tell time without a watch. I love clocks. Whenever there's a catalog that come in the mail I am tempted to buy yet another clock. My university had a bell tower but not a clock. Our excuse for being late for class was....well, no excuse, ha ha.

I have seen town clocks through the East and some places in the Midwest. And I had to wonder if today anyone cares about these in our digital age. Once time was important enough to give it a space in a tower in a wonderful building. How far we are away from that reality, with a watch on every wrist. Interesting..

In my town which is most famous for St. Joseph Proto-cathedral, first one west of the Aleghaney Mts. there is a beautiful clock in the tower. It had worked for years long ago. Just recently a group of locals got together and had it repaired. In fact there are four clock faces, one on each side. It strikes at 6, 12 and 6 and makes it so much more interesting. This was a great post.

We don't have clocks on towers where I live now or anywhere that I have lived that I can remember. It would be wonderful to have a clock tower such as Birmingham University's. Great photos!

i love the sundial. it reminds me of my days in elementary school where a sister showed us how to make one with a cardboard box, a marker and a popsickle wooden stick.... rudimentary but it worked.

In the Wellington Botanical gardens, just outside the observatory and not far from the Meteorological Office, is a sundial that you have to stand in for it to work. The endless variety of clocks around the world never ceases to delight.

Hi Bob,

These are cool! What a great selection you have shown us today. I really like the tall tower at Birmingham University the best.

Hope you have a great weekend,

Kathy M.

And then there's the old question: Does anyone really know what time it is?
