Sunday Stamps - Birds: Norway, Poland

I have shown all my stamps of dogs before so this time I settled for birds.

A regular visitor to our garden is the robin so he had to appear first.

Norway - 1 April 1982

I have never seen a falcon so this Polish stamp just had to appear.

Also from Poland is a bird that we know as the plover, peewit or lapwing.

One thing I like about the three stamps is that they all include the Latin names of the birds.

Sunday Stamps - Dinosaurs: Poland, Great Britain.

To my surprise I found a Polish stamp containing a dinosaur, the styracosaurus,  that I had not heard of before.

It stood 1.8 metres tall and was over 5 metres long.

I have used stamps commemorating Sir Richard Owen's classification of dinosaurs before - fortunately in A-Z themed posts. That means I can post another today.

Stars, Moons or Planets

The most recent stamp I have from France was issued on 4 May 2009 and its a € denomination.

Two weeks ago I showed a Polish stamp depicting a statue of Nicolaus Copernicus

The biggest and oldest planetarium was founded in 1955 to commemorate him. It's located in the Silesian Central Park.

Aerial Views - Sunday Stamps II

This is yet another theme that proved harder than I thought. 

So much so, in fact, that initially I could only come up with these - not really true aerial shots at all.

I googled aerial views and found that of the many stamp images I had only one in my collection and that from 1969.

People at Work - Sunday Stamps II

On 21 July 1969 Poland commemorated the 25 anniversary of the establishment of the Polish Peoples Republic with a set of stamps showing people at work.

• Sulphur production
• Steel production

Farm Animals - Sunday Stamps II

The small farm in the village where I was born was noted for its ...

and its early morning calls.

This stamp is one of a set of eight from Poland showing:

Cows

Horses

The three stamps that I do not have depicted geese, pigs and sheep.

On the same day that I found them I also acquired a first day of issue of British Cattle - magnificent beasts.

The stamps are on what appears to be a card (nothing on the back). I wish it had been intact in view of the cow's horn at the bottom left.

The beast are:

• 16p Highland Cow
• 20.1/2p Chillingham White Bull
• 26p Hereford Bull
• 28p Welsh Black Bull
• 31p Irish Moiled Cow

I had not heard of the Irish breed before. The name Moiled is derived from the Gaelic "Maol" and refers to the fact that they have no horns.

Scenery - Sunday Stamps II

I'm a bit late in posting this week but have finally made it back home.

The stamps I have to show this week all date from 1966, one from Poland and a set of four from Great Britain.

Poland - 1966

Pieniny is a mountain range in the south of Poland and the north of Slovakia consisting mainly of limestone and dolomite rocks.

The British set shows landscapes from England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

Space Exploration - Sunday Stamps II

I guess everyone remembers that first landing on the moon in July 1969.

In the United Arab Emirates, Ras Al Khaima issued a set of stamps  commemorating International Cooperation in Space on 10 June, i.e, before that landing.

Others in the set covered the Apollo space program and Lunar Landing. These are two that I would love to get.

Continuing the moon landing theme Poland issued a stamp in 1971 commemorating Lunochod - 1

This was the first of two unmanned lunar rovers landed on the moon by the Soviet Union and on 17 November 1971 was the first to move freely on the surface .

A Hungarian stamp commemorated the 25th anniversary of Hungarian-Soviet scientific technical cooperation.

The Hubble Space Telescope has shown us some remarkable images of outer space.

A 2000 commemorative issue from the United States shows some of these.

Prams from Home and Abroad - Sepia Saturday

I though there might be a lot of 'Oohs' and 'Aahs' this week and I might not contribute so many. My first photo has appeared on Thematic Photography before but I think it qualifies for this week's pram theme.

'Pram' in Norwegian is a flat bottomed boat.

Somehow I don't think that this fisherman's pram would have floated very well.

As you may know I took part in the A-Z Challenge back in April for which I chose a castle theme. Here's one I could have included for 'Z' if I had known about it at the time.

Going to the dogs again - Sunday Stamps

I was going to post something quite different this week, until I came across these stamps on my favourite market stall.

Poland

The poodle and the Airedale terrier were immediately recognisable but not the bulldog.

I had some trouble with the next set too.

San Marino

The Pointer (top left) and the Boxer (btm right) were easy enough. I've seen several Salukis which are also known as  Italian Greyhounds (top middle) and this matches up with the English Greyhound (btm left). Knowing that San Marino is a republic in Central Italy helped with the 3 lire stamp.

My pocket sized dog book tells me that Maremma is a region by the Tyrrhenian Sea and that there is a breed called Maremaner Herder dogs. The picture in the book can only be the same type of dog as on the 3 lire stamp (top right) where it is identified as Pasture Maremmano. So I'll settle for describing it as a large sheep dog.

Transportation - Sunday Stamps

For this week's transportation theme I tried to avoid stamps I've shown before. What I found I've tried to put into an age sequence.

Poland - Stagecoach

Switching to the rails I found this locomotive in Germany.

I went by bus to Newcastle recently - it broke down before we were half way there!

For luxury you have to sail on an ocean liner (which I've never done).

Steven's Grandparents - Sepia Saturday

When in America earlier this year I found this photo on the wall of my daughter's and son-in-law's home.

This is a photograph of of photograph of a photograph taken before WWII in Warsaw. Maria and Tadeusz  were the grandparents of Steven, my son-in-law.

Tadeusz had been born in the Ukraine but after the Russian Revolution his mother took him at the age of 14 and Stefan, his 16 year-old brother, to Poland. Both brothers were Russian speakers. However Stefan did not like Poland and returned to Russia when he was 17 only to be arrested as a spy. He spent 8 years in Siberia before going to live in Palestine.

Tadeusz’s mother had high hopes for him; he was introduced to the Polish Ambassador in 1921-23 and mixed in Polish society’s highest levels. A clever man he was a humorist but he didn’t particularly like the ladies amongst whom his mother hoped he would find a wife. He married Maria Skǒumka, an orphan girl whom he had met in a pub when she was 17. They had a daughter and Stefan, a son who was to become Steven’s father. The daughter died when Stefan was 2 years old.

Tadeusz became an accountant and worked for a Warsaw tyre company. He was killed in 1939 when the Germans bombed Warsaw; he did not get to the air-raid shelter with the rest of his family when his home was hit.

It's ironic that thanks to Steven I can post this information about his grandparents but can only search census records and the like to find out about mine.

Dogs on Sunday Stamps

As Viridian has given us a choice and I write about them from time to time I decided to show stamps of dogs this week.

As they are descended from wolves I thought I would start with a Polish stamp.

Poland

Next stop is Manama with what looks like a Terrier.

I have a number of stamps from the time I spent in Norway including this one of a dog with a splendid name.

I had to show this series of stamps from the USA as it includes two breeds owned by my daughter.

Animal Rescue stamps - USA - adopt a shelter pet

Sam and Maxie, Golden Labradors, were my daughter's first two dogs. Although they have gone to the great boneyard in the sky she now has Cody, Scout and Lily - three Golden Retrievers.
