Sunday Stamps - Green: USA Canada, San Marino

I can resist posting this link for the colour green from 2016 as it shows the theme of Going Green

I can add to this three further stamps which are green in colour to some extent.

Winter sports - Sunday Stamps II

There's a Nordic slant to my stamps this week once you've been to winter sports at Bariloche in

In Norway you could partake in ski sports at Hjemland

I don't remember seeing a skier dressed like that!

I only remember the football World Cup in 1966 so would not have been aware of the World Speed Skating Championships held in Gothenburg that year.

Sweden - 18 Feb 1966

Winter Scenes - Sunday Stamps II

I looked for something depicting winter storms but came up with a blank. I thought I was going to forced to show something from Winter Olympics like this one from Cortina, Italy.

I wouldn't have looked at that one twice if it hadn't been for the sledge, nor this one until I realised it depicted footsteps in the snow.

Sweden - Oskar Andersson, 24 March 1977

The Swedish cartoonist Oskar Andersson was born in 1877 and was well known for his signature OA which you can see on the stamp. Tragically he committed suicide in 1906.

I found more mountain scenery depicting tourism in Sweden's neighbouring country.

Norway - 24 March 1983

I'd prefer to be at the head of this line - going down to where it's warm.

San Marino, Shapes and Australia - Sunday Stamps II

I thought I had shown all my 'shaped' stamps before so I went looking for more this week.

The Republic of San Marino, in Italy, first issued stamps in 1877 but I do not know when these sporting triangles were issued.

San Marino

In 2003 Great Britain issued a set of Fruit and Vegetables which could be regarded as shaped stamps. Here's one I showed earlier.

I have another stamp that I couldn't identify for years.

A Great Britain Lemon

Apparently the Fruit and Vegetable set was printed in sheets of 10 with the stamp pane accompanied by a pane of self adhesive labels with ears, eyes, mouths and hats etc intended for attachment to the fruit and vegetables depicted. That's why the answer is a lemon!

In looking for Australian stamps this week I've learnt a little history about Tasmania.

Australia - Bay of Fires, Tasmania

The Bay of Fires (indigenous name larapuna) on the north-east coast of Tasmania was given that name in 1773 by Captain Tobias Furneaux who saw fires of Aboriginal people on the beaches. Furneaux was on the ship Adventure; an English navigator and Royal Naval officer he accompanied James Cook on his second voyage of exploration.

Australia - Maria Island, Tasmania

The entire island is a national park. It was named in 1642 by the Dutch Explorer Abel Tasman after Maria van Diemen, the wife of the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. Tasmania was once called Van Diemen's Land.

Going to the dogs again - Sunday Stamps

I was going to post something quite different this week, until I came across these stamps on my favourite market stall.

Poland

The poodle and the Airedale terrier were immediately recognisable but not the bulldog.

I had some trouble with the next set too.

San Marino

The Pointer (top left) and the Boxer (btm right) were easy enough. I've seen several Salukis which are also known as  Italian Greyhounds (top middle) and this matches up with the English Greyhound (btm left). Knowing that San Marino is a republic in Central Italy helped with the 3 lire stamp.

My pocket sized dog book tells me that Maremma is a region by the Tyrrhenian Sea and that there is a breed called Maremaner Herder dogs. The picture in the book can only be the same type of dog as on the 3 lire stamp (top right) where it is identified as Pasture Maremmano. So I'll settle for describing it as a large sheep dog.
