Sunday Stamps - Bridges - Bohemia & Moravia, New Hebrides

I had to look hard for bridge stamps that I hadn't shown before.

With a bit of luck I found this from the New Hebrides,

New Hebrides - 15 August 1986

I then had to find where the New Hebrides were, especially as the stamp carries the EIIR designation. It now is the independent country of Vanuatu.

The Lainsitz Bridge is located in Czechoslovakia - the stamp depicting it is from 1940.

Bohemia & Moravia - 20 November 1940

Sunday Stamps - Countries whose names have changed: Ceylon, Belgian Congo, Czechoslovakia

My brother spent 22 yrs in the Fleet Air Arm on board many of WWII aircraft carriers and on several wartime land bases. One of these was Ceylon which is now Sri Lanka.

Ceylon - 1951

Not exactly an aircraft carrier is it?

Czechoslovakia as the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic was under Russian control from 1948 - 1990. In 1993 the country was split into the Czechoslovakia Republic and Slovakia.

Czechoslovakia - 25 September 1967

I have no stamps from Slovakia but some from the Czech Republic.

A Belgian Colony in Africa, the Belgian Congo adopted its present name of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1964.

Belgian Congo - 1952/1953

For other countries whose names now do not exist start with Southern Rhodesia at Crowns on Sunday Stamps

Sunday Stamps - The Colour Yellow: Czechoslovakia, Romania

Yellow proved a more difficult theme than I expected once I discarded birds and flowers, many of which I have shown before.

However then colias palaeno fluttered in from Czechoslovakia -

Czechoslovakia - 23 May 1966

This is a Moorland Clouded Yellow.

In Romania I found an exhibition pavilion with a yellow background from the Fourth Bucharest Fair.

Romania - 12 October 1962

Sunday Stamps - I3 Czechoslovakia, Great Britain

A scarce swallowtail butterfly is my first stamp this week.
Czechoslovakia - 23 May 1966
Iphiclides
podalirius
Other names for iphiclides podalirius are sail swallowtail and pear tree swallowtail.

1978 was the year for the 25th Anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth when she was crowned with the -
Great Britain - 31 May 1978
Imperial State Crown
The Queen also wears this crown at the annual State Opening of Parliament.

In 1841 Sir Richard Owen coined the word dinosaur from two Greek words - deinos (terrible, powerful, wondrous) and sauros (lizard). Owen was also responsible for setting up what we now know as the Natural History Museum.
Great Britain - 20 August 1991
150th Anniversary of Owen's Dinosaurs
Iguanodon

Sunday Stamps II A-Z 'C' ; Castles

I have posted about castles earlier in an April A-Z Challenge and in Sunday Stamps. However I still have many left.

In March 1960 Czechoslovakia issued these two -

Beděz Castle (dates from 1200s)
Kost Castle
Kost Castle from the East
Bohemia and Moravia were in the Czechoslovakia Protectorate early in WWII and Pernstejn Castle in Southern Moravia appeared on a stamp.

Bohemia & Moravia - 29 June 1940

The 700th Anniversary of Koldinghus Castle was commemorated by Denmark on 13 June 1968 with this stamp -

Koldinghus Castle

The castle is the last Danish royal castle in Kolding on the Peninsula of Jutland and was fully restored in 1991.

Sunday Stamps !! A-Z 'Z' - Czechoslovakia. South Africa

As we come to the end of this round of A-Z I thought I would have at least 2 'Zs' for the price of one -

Czechoslovakia - 18 July 1953
Antonín Zápotocký was born at Zákolany in 1884. A communist, he became Prime Minister in 1948, and President in 1953 until his death later that year.

I searched for a stamp connected with Zulus but had to settle for this South African stamp from 1954

Zebra - 14 October 1954

Butterflies and Moths - Sunday Stamps II

It took me some time to identify the butterflies, and possibly one moth, on a set of stamps I acquired recently for this theme. There are 6 in the set , but I have only 5 of them all issued on 23 May 1966.

Czechoslovakia
I recognised this as a swallowtail immediately. The Czech name is at the bottom of the stamp and its Latin name down the right hand side. Apparently it is known as the Scarce Swallowtail.

Clouded Yellow
Todler Red
Despite what may seem a strange appearance photos on the internet clearly show differences on the wing, with the purple colouration covering part or all of one wing.

Jason Red-eyed Parnassius Apollo
Photos of the next insect at rest made me think it is a moth.

I hadn't found a common name for the Panaxia Dominula until a few moments ago. Apparently it is a Scarlet Tiger Moth.

Technology/industry - Sunday Stamps II

I'm sure that you are all aware how quickly technology gets outdated. The FDC I acquired recently illustrates this very well.

Great Britain - Information Technology, 8 Sept 1982
You will appreciate this more when you look at the individual stamps.

Development of Communications
Modern Technological Aids
I don't think I need to explain anything else.

From 1939 when Germany occupied Czechoslovakia, the country was split into Bohemia and Moravia.

Czechoslovakia: Bohemia - 1939
The stamp shows the ironworks at Moravska-Ostrava.

A stamp from South Africa depicts

South Africa - 1961, Western Deep Level Mine
The mine is located in the West Wits gold field and then was said to be the world's deepest.

Animals in the wild - Sunday Stamps II

I looked for a lion stamp as a tribute to Cecil. Unfortunately I could not find one, nor one of a dentist in the wild.

Czechoslovakia has some fine animal stamps. Here are four that I like in particular.

Wild Cat & Beaver
Brown Long-Eared Bat & Marmot
You need very good eyes to see that these stamps have 1990 on the vertical edges.

For more animals in the wild please follow the links at Sunday-Stamps-ii-33.

Sporting Events - Sunday Stamps II

As the finals at Wimbledon are being held this weekend I looked for tennis stamps.

Czechoslovakia - 22 Feb 1973
This stamp was to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the tennis organisation in Czechoslovakia.

It wasn't to be Andy Murray's year this time but:

Great Britain - 2013 - he won
From Australia I found an Olympic diver

Australia
If that date stamp is 1976, the Olympics were in Montreal that year.

I can still touch my toes but there is no way I could ever look as graceful as that.

Perhaps I would do better at archery in a European Championship.

Italy - 2011
I searched hard to find a stamp relating to women's football to celebrate the recent World Cup in Canada and England's relative success in finishing third.

I had to settle for the men's moment of glory in 1966 instead.

Great Britain

Postal Theme - Sunday Stamps II

I've used up all my postbox stamps before so I shall have to use some stamps that I didn't realise were part of a postal issue.

I'm sure however that no one would forget to use the postal code if they had a stamp like this.

The next three stamps were 'scattered' across an album page. It was only when I searched for mail related stamps that I found they were a part of a postal issue set from 1974.

Czechoslovakia - 1974
All I have to do now is to find the other one that makes up the set - a postilion on a horse.

For postboxes and postal themes from other countries just follow the links at Sunday-Stamps-ii-29.

World Cup - Sunday Stamps

With the World Cup in full swing it seemed appropriate to choose football stamps this week.

The tournament in Sweden in 1958 saw Brazil win the cup. Poor England had their worst result ever until this year when we are 'out' after just two matches. However my World Cup stamp from that year comes from none of these three countries.

World Cup 1958 - Czechoslovakia
1962 saw Chile host the tournament, won yet again by Brazil. My stamp for this is not from Chile either but from -

World Cup 1962 - Hungary
A stamp from Ruanda commemorated the Cup in 1966.

World Cup 1966 - Ruanda
Of course the Cup that year was hosted by England; Great Britain issued a set of three commemoratives on 1 June 1966. I only have two of these.

World Cup 1966 - Great Britain
The stamps were:
  • 4d Player with Ball
  • 6d Goalmouth Melee
  • 1/3d Goalkeeper saving Goal.
The 4d stamp was reissued on 18 June 1966 with the wording added "ENGLAND WINNERS"

I wonder how many tears there will be and how many years we will have to wait to see that again.

World Cup - Sunday Stamps

I have had to photograph two stamps from my daughter's album to take part this week. The stamps I selected show action from teams in 1958 and 1970.

Czechoslovakia - World Cup 1958, Stockholm
Yemen Arab Republic - World (Jules Rimet) Cup 1970. Mexico
I will not be taking part next week as I cannot access se-tenant stamps. My favourite market stall holder is too far away to visit although I could check out what America's Stamp Shop in Berkley, Michigan has to offer. We found them very helpful last week when we were looking for some album page refills.

They have a massive stock of stamps and collections from all over the world. As the reverse of their card shows they have been in business for 35 years.

But for stamps others have chosen this week pop across to Vliridian's Sunday-Stamps-137.
