Sunday Stamps - Flags; Hungary plus?

It's evident from my stamp collection that it is the USA that features its flags the most. However in Great Britain it was 2001 before the Union Jack appeared on a stamp as the subject in its own right along with the White Ensign in a series on the submarine service.

!962 was a World Cup year, Chile was the host country and the cup was won by Brazil.

It was Hungary however who had a series of stamps showing the competing nations.

Hungary - 21 May 1962

These are six of the eight stamps in the series. How many flags do you recognise?

The stamps are designed to be viewed with the flagpole vertical so I hope you do not get a crick in your neck.

For more flags test your knowledge of vexillology at Sticks and Flags.

Sunday Stamps II A-Z 'R' USA, Great Britain

Back in the 1950s when I was at school, I won my boxing colours and was captain of the boxing team. I wish I could say that I was undefeated like Rocky Marciano, the world heavyweight champion of the time,

USA -26 May 1999
Rocky (not the film) was on the stamp for the 1950s in the Celebrate the Century series.

From boxing to a gentler pastime of poetry for my next stamp from the USA.

" I wake to sleep and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn  by going where I have to go."

USA - 21 April 2012
Theodore Roethke (1908-1963) is one of the ten 20th century poets that appeared on this set in 2012. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1954.

At this time so many years since England won the football world cup, I have chosen a stamp from back then (1966) showing what is claimed to be Britain's favourite bird.

Great Britain - 6 August 1966
Just like the one that chases other birds away from our feeders when it wants to eat.

This year sees the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Air Force. For the 50th anniversary in 1968 a commemorative stamp showed a Sopwith Camel from WWI and English Electric Lightning Fighters from the 1960s.

Great Britain - 29 May 1968

World Cup - Sunday Stamps

With the World Cup in full swing it seemed appropriate to choose football stamps this week.

The tournament in Sweden in 1958 saw Brazil win the cup. Poor England had their worst result ever until this year when we are 'out' after just two matches. However my World Cup stamp from that year comes from none of these three countries.

World Cup 1958 - Czechoslovakia
1962 saw Chile host the tournament, won yet again by Brazil. My stamp for this is not from Chile either but from -

World Cup 1962 - Hungary
A stamp from Ruanda commemorated the Cup in 1966.

World Cup 1966 - Ruanda
Of course the Cup that year was hosted by England; Great Britain issued a set of three commemoratives on 1 June 1966. I only have two of these.

World Cup 1966 - Great Britain
The stamps were:
  • 4d Player with Ball
  • 6d Goalmouth Melee
  • 1/3d Goalkeeper saving Goal.
The 4d stamp was reissued on 18 June 1966 with the wording added "ENGLAND WINNERS"

I wonder how many tears there will be and how many years we will have to wait to see that again.

World Cup - Sunday Stamps

I have had to photograph two stamps from my daughter's album to take part this week. The stamps I selected show action from teams in 1958 and 1970.

Czechoslovakia - World Cup 1958, Stockholm
Yemen Arab Republic - World (Jules Rimet) Cup 1970. Mexico
I will not be taking part next week as I cannot access se-tenant stamps. My favourite market stall holder is too far away to visit although I could check out what America's Stamp Shop in Berkley, Michigan has to offer. We found them very helpful last week when we were looking for some album page refills.

They have a massive stock of stamps and collections from all over the world. As the reverse of their card shows they have been in business for 35 years.

But for stamps others have chosen this week pop across to Vliridian's Sunday-Stamps-137.
