Castles on Sunday Stamps - Denmark, West Germany

From Denmark and the island of Funen comes a medieval  castle where King Eric V signed Denmark's first constitution in 1252. The castle was also the venue for the country's first parliament, the Danehof.

Denmark - 16 Aug 1954 - Castle Nyborg

From an island location to two wasserschloss in Germany which appeared on West German stamps before reunification. A wasserschloss is a castle surrounded by a moat.

West Germany - 13 January 1973 - Gluckburg Castle

This water castle on the Flensburg Fjord was built from 1553 - 1597 by the son of a Danish king and is now a museum.

The water castle in Inzlingen is on the southwestern border of Germany near the Swiss city of Basel.

West Germany - 14 February 1980

Neuschwanstein Castle lies in a village near the town of Füssen
in South West Bavaria.

West Germany - 13 January 1977

Sunday Stamps - science: Denmark, West Germany

As part of my degree course at St Andrews University in the 1950s I had to study Atomic Physics for a term. That's where I first heard of Niels Bohr's Atomic theory.

Denmark - 21 Nov !963
In 1813 Bohr had proposed a theory for the hydrogen atom based on quantum theory that energy is transferred only in well defined quantities. Electrons move round the nucleus in prescribed orbits and when they jump from one orbit to another with lower energy a light quantum is emitted.

These stamps were issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his theory. His atomic model depicts a positive charged nucleus surrounded by electrons travelling in circular orbits defined by their energy level.

By the time of this anniversary we had seen the first Russian space flight (1961). Equipment used to track this event had included radio  telescopes.

This one appeared on a German stamp.

West Germany - 15 July 1975

Sunday Stamps N4 Denmark, Germany

My stamps on Danish navigation show different eras, but nothing from the time of issue.

Denmark - 24 September 1970

From Germany (West Germany) I found a stamp supposedly concerning protection of nature.

(West) Germany - 5 June 1973
'Umweltschutz luft' however translates as environmental  protection of the air.

(West) Germany - 13 May 1976
This rather splendid EUROPA stamp depicts a newspaper boy.

Flying - Sunday Stamps II

I wondered when I would get the chance to post from both the DDR (East Germany) and West Germany at the same time. Today's the day with this 'Flying' theme.

DDR - Airmail -13 December 1957
And from the West a more colourful helicopter in an industry and technical series.

West Germany - 15 May 1975
For an earlier Airmail we have to fly over the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.

China - 1 May 1951
The temple complex was constructed in the 1400s; it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. another one I will not get to see.

Now take off and get flying not forgetting to change planes at the links on Sunday-Stamps-II-119.
