Sunday Stamps U3 - Germany, Netherlands, Sweden

Some letters are proving more difficult as we near the end of another A-Z round but the DDR gave me an unexpected surprise with -
DDR (East Germany) - 6 December 1967
This was Walter Ulbricht, the German communist leader and someone I vaguely remember.

In the Netherlands I came across this heavily postmarked commemoration for the 100th anniversary of the United Nations Telecommunications Union (ITU).
Netherlands - 17 May 1965
Finally it was Sweden that came to mind, I just knew that Uppsala would appear on a stamp - even in this case with a double U.
Sweden - 2 June 1977
Founded in the 1477 it was a donation from King Gustavus that put Uppsala University on a sound financial footing. The stamp commemorates its 500th anniversary.

Sunday Stamps II - A-Z 'S' Germany

I have a number of Swastika stamps from the time of the Third Reich but I have no intention of ever showing those. I've settled instead for the poet/playwright and compatriot of Goethe -

Germany  - Friedrich Schiller (1759/1805)
I must confess I do not know of any of Schiller's work, but knew of -

DDR (East Germany) - 18 March 1975
It was Albert Schweitzer who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952,  and who is possibly more famous for setting up his hospital in Lambaréné in what was then the French Equatorial Africa (now Gabon). Schweitzer used his prize money to set up the leprosarium there. He died at his hospital in 1965.

Flying - Sunday Stamps II

I wondered when I would get the chance to post from both the DDR (East Germany) and West Germany at the same time. Today's the day with this 'Flying' theme.

DDR - Airmail -13 December 1957
And from the West a more colourful helicopter in an industry and technical series.

West Germany - 15 May 1975
For an earlier Airmail we have to fly over the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.

China - 1 May 1951
The temple complex was constructed in the 1400s; it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. another one I will not get to see.

Now take off and get flying not forgetting to change planes at the links on Sunday-Stamps-II-119.

Industry on Sunday Stamps

I'm staying in Europe for my stamps on an industrial theme.

Belgium - 50th Anniversary of the International Labour Organisation - issue 31 May 1969
Two stamps from the former Democratic Republic of Germany (East Germany)

DDR - Machinists, 1953
DDR - 1953
From Norway I found  a stamp commemorating the centenary of the handcraft man's society in 1986.

Norway
As I started my career in industry at a British steelworks I was pleased to find I had a steelworks stamp - not from Britain though.

Portugal - Iron & Steel Complex, issued 2 January 1980
