Sunday Stamps N4 Denmark, Germany

My stamps on Danish navigation show different eras, but nothing from the time of issue.

Denmark - 24 September 1970

From Germany (West Germany) I found a stamp supposedly concerning protection of nature.

(West) Germany - 5 June 1973
'Umweltschutz luft' however translates as environmental  protection of the air.

(West) Germany - 13 May 1976
This rather splendid EUROPA stamp depicts a newspaper boy.

Trees - Sunday Stamps

The theme this week proved more difficult than I thought. Perhaps I couldn't see the wood for the trees.

However I am reasonably sure what this is.

Bangladesh - Palm Tree
Still in the southern hemisphere I came across a log, even if I don't know what tree it came from.

New Zealand
In colder northern climes a make believe tree.

Iceland - Europa CEPT
Perhaps this one is easier to identify.

Iceland - Spruce?
My final tree is one produced by a Norwegian romantic painter.

Norway - Slindebirken by Thomas Fearnley (1802-1842)

I believe this is a birch of some sort.

I'm hoping someone will be able to show some trees from Britain. I know of at least two that have appeared - the horse chestnut and the oak.

To see other varieties please cross over to Sunday-stamps-131.

Cartoons - Sunday Stamps

I'm not sure that I succeeded this week but I'll let you be the judge. I even had to resort to Christmas stamps to get any where near.

Great Britain - Christmas 1966
I know this one is much more recent, perhaps someone will tell me the year.

Great Britain - Christmas ??
It would be very appropriate for us as this fellow stands in our garden today.

The only other stamp I could find was an Europa Circus Stamp from 2002.

Krazy Kar - 2002
I hope these meet with approval from others involved at Viridian's Sunday-Stamps-106.

Beginning or End - Sunday Stamps

I had several stamps lined up  to cover the beginning of something as I thought, erroneously, that this was the theme for this week's Sunday Stamps. Now I find the actual challenge is to find a stamp commemorating the end of something.

Nevertheless I am going to proceed with what I had in mind to see if I can get there in the end.

My favourite market stallholder seems to have bought up the collection of a man from the town of Hartlepool. Among a number of first day covers, I found this:

Philatelic Souvenir from Spain
Inside the envelope was a hand written message on a card.

From this I have deduced that Mother and Dad had begun their holiday in Spain and as you can see the plane was new. Boeings 737s started commercial services in 1968; unfortunately the date on the postmark can't be seen but could have been in the early 1970s.

The postmark tells us the envelope was posted at Malgrat; Malgrat de Mar is situated in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.

The two CEPT stamps with the Europa Bird were first issued in 1961.

The stamps on the bottom row show the Costa Brava and Lope de Vega, author, playwright and poet (1562-1635)

On the top row from left to right are:
  • Torla in the province of Huesca, Aragon. Take a good look at the stamp and compare it with this picture ex wikipedia
Torla (by Gordito1869 - 1987 - CC BY 3.0)
  • Nave Medieval - medieval ship.
  • Betanzosica, Corunna - Emblem, church stamp issued 1967
  • Catedral Sevilla - Seville Cathedral issued in 1965.
That's the last of the stamps I have to offer, Perhaps I should say that Seville Cathedral is a World Heritage Site. It also the burial site for Christopher Columbus so you could claim that his voyages came to an end here.

900th Anniversary - Sunday Stamps

For the commemorative theme this week I went looking for oldest anniversary issue I could find. I came up with two 900th anniversary stamps

Westminster Abbey
This was issued on 28 February 1966, one of two commemorative stamps. The other which I have never seen other than as a facsimile was for 2 shillings and six pence.

My second stamp was one of a set of eight issued on 14 October 1966; again I only have the one.

Battle of Hastings 1066
Six of the set had 4d denominations and there was one at 6d and one at 1s 3d.

As regular visitors to my Sunday Stamps will know I have a pet market stall holder. This week I thought I had struck gold when I found a set of postcards.

Four postcards were attached to this commemorating events  by boat, plane, tram and train in 1938.

The Mallard - New World Record 126mph
The reverse carried a date stamp of 6 July 1938 at a place called Essendine - a station on the Mallard's route and a place near to my boyhood home.

It wasn't until I had carried my 'treasure' home that I realised this stamp and those on the other cards were not real. They were all prints of Great Britain Europa stamps issued in 1988!

Nevertheless I did not feel I'd been robbed as the whole lot cost me 50p.

For other real commemoratives I suggest you visit other posts at Viridian's Sunday-stamps-98
