Glenbuchat Castle

Glenbuchat Castle

Glenbuchat Castle - 2007
Glenbuchat Castle sits on a bluff above the River Don, near Kildrummy in Aberdeenshire. The Z-plan castle has a rectangular central tower with two square towers at diagonally opposing corners.

The castle was built in 1590 to mark the wedding of John Gordon of Cairnbarrow and his wife Helen. A later John Gordon, known as ‘Old Glenbucket’ (an older spelling) supported the Jacobite cause and became a hero of the Jacobite Risings.

So far my posts have managed to include ghostly hauntings. It was the infamy achieved by Old Glenbucket that supposedly haunted the dreams of King George III.

After the sale of the castle in 1738 the castle fell into disrepair. Purchased by James Barclay in 1901, it was handed to the state in 1946. The main spiral staircase to the castle’s upper levels has been restored.

Glenbuchat is usually unmanned and access to a viewing platform erected across the central area is restricted. Visitors may however explore the first floor and the vaulted ground-floor rooms.

However if you wanted to see Scotland’s most haunted castle then you should go to Glamis which I wrote about here in November 2010.

Very cool. I am going to read more of you posts since we have to visit the British Isles next year.

I am trying to read all the A to Z blogs, but coming back to the ones I really like.
Looking forward to seeing what you do all month!

I'd probably skip Glamis, but only because I fear ghosts, even if I don't believe in them.

Oh my, was that a large bunny, or a ghost of the lovely castle roaming past the darkened window? Ha, ha! At least they made it open to view some of the castle....and I would certainly take a tour of this castle, any day! Nice post.

What an awesome castle. That Z plan for the castle is an amazing idea. So glad that the staircase has been restored. This is excellent, Bob. I'd love to have some time to tour all these castles. Old Glenbucket!

Old Glenbucket - it sounds like the name spotty fifth-formers would drema up for their science master in a Bunter novel.

Again I am amazed at how long ago the structure was built and yet it's still standing.
