Greyish - Thematic Photography

When I saw the theme was greyish I immediately thought of battleship grey.

HMS Illustrious - 1940 Aircraft Carrier
This photo comes from my brother's photos taken during WWII. He served on the Illustrious in the Mediterranean  and may have been aboard when Swordfish aircraft from the carrier attacked the Italian fleet at Taranto.

Swordfish (I think)

Seaplanes also flew off carriers but this one seems to have lost its way.

Grounded - Supermarine Walrus
To add a bit of colour to our greyish theme I'll change to grey and green,

13th Century Parish Church, St Mawgan, Cornwall
Dedicated to St Mauganus and St Nicholas

St Mauganus was a Welshman so I'm told.

In North Yorkshire the best preserved ruins of a Cistercian monastery are those of Fountains Abbey.

Fountains Abbey, North Yorkshire
I have nearly 40 photos of the Abbey but for this greyish theme you will have to be satisfied with one.

For other grey matters you need to pay a visit to Carmi's thematic photographic 185

If one says greyish then England on a rainy day comes to mind...or perhaps just a visit at one of your lovely castles...or to linger by an old battleship ...absolutely cool greyish photos Bob...and interesting too....enjoyed my greyish stroll before heading out to work!

I love your photos here... Especially the ones from your brother!. wow, a bit of history you have... Architecture has always amazed me,especially European architecture- they seem to have a story in each creation..

That’s a good range from battleships to churches and abbeys! I love Fountains Abbey and I think we probably have nearly as any photos of abbeys as you. The children used to groan, "Not another abbey (or monastery)!” We’re over it now :)

Oh no, you’ve still got that horrid word verification on! It’s getting so hard to get it right first time.

Nice theme and photos Bob. The old military ones are fascinating.

Your decision to use green concurs with the greenygrey environmental protection declaration: 'To add colour to a grey day, splash a touch of green!'

Oh, Fountains Abbey! I was there a decade or so ago! It was a beautiful spot, but for some reason I remember the monks' latrines the best! :)

The military photos are fascinating. And Abbey's provide endless photo ops!

Great photos! Even when the sun is out in England, there's a touch of grey around the corner in the form of sky or stone. The abbey is hauntingly beautiful. I bet it gets some interesting shadows late in the day.

A marvellous assortment of grey! But they don't make (a) Battleships or (b) abbeys like that any more!!

I really like all your takes on grey.

Love your choices! Each post I visit, reminds me of more grey I could add :)

Lovely photos! I was feeling totally uninspired about this theme, but this great selection has given me some late-in-the-day ideas.
