Scarecrows - II
Here are some more of the entries from Kirklevington village's Scarecrow Competition held on 18 June.
But as usual, the caterpillar does all the work for the butterfly to get all the attention.
When it comes to scarecrows, they don't get much bigger than this.
Unfortunately I cannot put a name to him, unlike the character shown next.

And a Very Hungry Caterpillar

Have you picked a favourite yet; remember there will be more to come.

The village of Kirklevington is holding the annual Kirkfest this week. It started last Saturday with the scarecrow competition.
There were 17 entrants this year and one in particular was a challenge to photograph. Children were invited to -

This involved following a winding path across the grass -
not stopping to pet the 'dog.'
It doesn't bite
Just read the clues on the cards on each post as you go along. Eventually you find -

Of course if you were tall enough to see over the hedge you could see the display.

If you cheated you might even have seen -

I'll post more of the scarecrows in days to come. You may also pick a favourite to see whether you agree with the winners selected by the judges.

Kirkfest Scarecrows - 2015
In my home village of Kirklevington in North Yorkshire 20-28 June is Kirkfest Week.
One of the first events is the annual scarecrow competition. The theme this year was TV shows.
I have to confess I did not recognise the show in all of them and I suspect that a number are from children's television.
However at the Village Hall there was no mistaking:
Britain's Got Talent
Others are more difficult to place.
Most of us would recognise Del Boy though in:
Only Fools and Horse Feed
I'm sure that this would have gone down well with the runners at;
Kirkfest Races
Perhaps this few shots will act as a carrot to bring you back for more scarecrows in later posts.
Don't forget I shall ask you which you thought the best when we get to the end.

The Cricket Match - Kirkfest Scarecrows
The annual scarecrow competition was held on the first Saturday of Kirkfest in the village of Kirklevington.
I will be showing the majority of the scarecrows that entered starting with the one I liked best.
The Cricket Match
This was not an easy scene to photograph even when viewed from different angles but from left to right you have:
A down-in-the-mouth Umpire
From a different angle you can see he has his hand raised to signal 'Out' to the 'Owzat!' appeal.
The batsman however is pleased to make sure you know he is representing his home county.
The number of spectators is not large.
Just the Vicar and his wife
They obviously took up the invitation given by the lady in the pink dress; I wonder where he got the biscuit from.
And of course there is only one tea she will serve,
However on a pitch as green as this the bowler must have the advantage.
Until you see how short the boundaries are.

Summer - Thematic Photography
We have spent the weekend combating wasps. My wife found out the hard way that they were not amused when the clematis was being pruned and they attacked when disturbed. They had a nest in our bird box. The only way we defeated them was to drop the box into a bucket of water and hold it under with a house brick for 24 hours.
Other creatures are much less threatening in the summer sun.

This photo was taken from 15ft away and through the double glazed window of our lounge.
I also came across a youngster that was not in the least bit afraid.
Young Grey Squirrel
They must have known that it's summer time in the village this week.
Last Saturday it was the annual scarecrow competition. But what says it's summer in England more than a game of cricket?

Twenty-six houses hosted scarecrows this year. I'll post more of them in separate blog posts as I did last year.
