Bird of the week

There are a number of fields near where we live that are so waterlogged that they are a favourite place for ducks like these today.

Two drakes and a hen mallard duck

Although you can quite clearly see the female on the ground I didn't realise she was there until I saved the photos to my computer.

Just out of shot were two more drakes. Pictures taken from 30 yards away.

Wildlife - Thematic Photography

I'm always on the lookout for wildlife to photograph when I'm out. Quite often it's small creatures that catch my eye.

Caterpillar on the ground
It's the caterpillar that does all the work but the butterfly or moth that gets all the publicity.

If you are a birdwatcher there will come a time when it seems the bird is watching you.

But you wonder how these fellows stay so clean as they approach the mud.

When it comes to colours, a snail stands out

Sometimes wildlife comes to you - like these two in the Michigan dusk.

Rocky and Bambi share a meal
There are even times when you don't have to leave your lounge to see scenes like these.

Pairs - Thematic Photography

A field that I go by regularly has given me a pair of photos that fit Carmi's 'Pairs' theme.

The field has been waterlogged in one corner for several years. This year the heavy rains have extended the flooded area and have made it ideal for visitors like these.

Guess they are wondered how the other guy pulls the birds.

March Madness - Thematic Photography

The madness theme this week has driven me crazy trying to find photos taken in March. I settled for these:

These ducks have appeared before but not on a thematic blog. There is a corner of a field miles away from lakes or rivers that has been 'flooded' for over two years, sometimes the water area is quite large, at others it's just mud. I'm not too sure what the drakes were up to here in March 2009, but it was springtime after all.

In my second photo it's the photographer who is mad. I waited for what seemed like hours to catch a great tit on the bird feeder, but it only ever had its back to me in March 2008.

Finally my son sent me this picture taken in Fowey, Cornwall also in March 2008. It must have been windy!
