Sunday Stamps - Y4 Great Britain, Yugoslavia

'Y' turned out to be more difficult than I expected until I found a stamp depicting a roof boss from a church within 40 miles of where I live.

Great Britain - 27 November 1974

The boss from York Minster represents The Adoration of the Magi.

I had to resort to a tourism/sightseeing stamp from Yugoslavia for my second stamp.

Yugoslavia - 8 July 1972

There is a church on this stamp as well. However I have not established its exact location.

Sunday Stamps - Y3 China, Yugoslavia, USA

I have had  to revert to a country name this week by choosing Yugoslavia for one of my stamps.

Yugoslavia - December 1951

The country broke up in 1992 and the area has had a turbulent history since.

Another country that has seen major changes in my lifetime is -

China - 6 January 1949

The gentleman on the stamp is Dr Sun Yat-sen, once leader of the Chinese National Party known as the father of modern China. He served as the first provisional president of the Republic of China in 1911/1912 and as defacto ruler 1923-1925.

I have never had the chance to visit any of the National Parks in the USA but here is one that is known worldwide.

Sunday Stamps II A-Z 'Y' - Yugoslavia, USA

A-Z has got harder the nearer we have got to 'Z', it seems that I was in my youth when we started - now I need some support for 'Y'

USA - 1 May 1968

A country that has seen turbulent times is - 

Yugoslavia - 1 April 1959

This stamp depicting the Jablanica Dam is from a series of stamps of dams along with an architectural theme which also included in 1961 - 

Ckonje, Macedonia

The Republic of Macedonia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. The river may be the Vivar but I have still to verify that.

Birds from Europe, Middle East and South Africa - Sunday Stamps

For birds this week I decided to start with some game birds from Europe.

Switzerland - Alectoris graeca - Rock Partridge

The Ring-necked Pheasant occurs in many countries, including - 

Yugoslavia - Phasianus colchicus

I just wonder whether a bird of prey used for sport would take one of those.

Finally two birds from South Africa.

South Africa - Bokmakierie and Bateleur

The Bokmakierie (Maiaconotus zeylonus) is a large yellow bushshrike. As you may be able to tell from its beak the Bateleur (Tetrathorpius ecaudatus) is an eagle.

Presidents and Kings - Sunday Stamps

My stamps this weeks cover men and countries where there has been turmoil in my lifetime.

Josip Broz Tito - Yugoslavia

After the 1914-18 war Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia became the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Following the German occupation (1941-45) the country became a republic with Tito as its president. In 1963 he became president for life - he died in 1980, but the disintegration of Yugoslavia had begun in 1974.

Mohammed Reza Pahlavi - Shah of Persia (Iran)

Mohammed Reza Pahlavi was Shah (King) of Iran from 16 September 1941 until he was overthrown by the Iranian Revolution on 11 February 1979.

A president in office for an even shorter time was the man who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.

Mikhail Gorbachev - President of the Soviet Union

Gorbachev was the first President of the Soviet Union until its dissolution on December 25, 1991.
