Tent Warfare - Sepia Saturday

When I saw the tents in the prompts for the next two weeks I knew I was in trouble - which photos do I show when even the sailor suit caused a problem of sorts.

Looks peaceful and a time for fun,

However during wartime in the Mediterranean it was serious business for my brother ashore during his Fleet Air Arm service in WWII.

Tented Accommodation
This was probably in Egypt where it was warm enough to:

Dry that white sailor suit

At another (treeless) location seen from the air I'm left to wonder who used the tents.

Recovering aircraft or operating a desert airstrip was even less luxurious.

Somewhere in the Middle East
I'm left to wonder as I never saw these pictures while he was alive. If I'd asked where, he'd probably have told me I didn't want to know.

After all when he left to go to war I was instructed to tell anyone who asked that he had gone to stick a bayonet up Hitler's arse.

For other experiences under canvas I suggest you check out the links at Sepia-Saturday-246.

A Blurry War - Thematic Photography

When I think of the hundreds of blurry photos that I have taken and destroyed or deleted I know why I have struggled with this week's blurred vision theme.

So I have had to resort to photos taken in the Mediterranean during WWII.

Malta blurred by German bombs.

These shots are from my brother's war photos. He served in the Fleet Air Arm aboard carriers. If I had been there with my camera I'm sure my vision would have been blurred as well.

At an Angle - Thematic Photography.

Angles creep into shots without you always being aware. I have several to meet Carmi's 'At an Angle' theme this week. I may have shown some of these before so let's see how many you can recognise.

Tall Ships - Hartlepool 2010
I'm sure that the angle of of this plane was not intended - did someone let go of the tail?

Nosedive - Mediterranean WWII
Cables on the Clifton side of Brunel's famous suspension bridge are at an angle too it seems.

Clifton Suspension Bridge - 2010
This big beast needs to have its jib at an angle when lifting heavy loads.

Balder - Heavy Lift Crane
The picture was taken during the construction of the Statfjord 'B' deck at Rosenberg Verft, Stavanger in the 1980s

This anchor is at an angle on the quayside in Copenhagen,

Anchor - Nyhavn, Copenhagen
Also at an angle because it was built that way is this Condeep test leg in Stavanger.

Troll test leg - 1980s.
Finally a picture that's out of this world.

Aurora on Jupiter  taken by the Hubble Telescope
Now that's an 'at an angle' shot that I would have loved to have taken.

War Work -Sepia Saturday

I've waited a time before showing some more of my brother's photos from WWII on board aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean.

Aircraft Recovery
I believe this is a Swordfish but will stand correcting if anyone knows better.

Two planes in a collision
It is difficult to imagine how they finished up like this.

Finally one on its nose.

Precarious position
This is a post in which I am lost for words other than I'm glad my brother came home safely.

Train Spotting - Sepia Saturday

Train spotting is not a hobby of mine but back in February I came across two iconic trains. They appeared originally in a thematic photography post; here they are again. I hope you can make up your mind whether (get it?) they qualify:

Locomotion

Regular contributors to Sepia Saturday posts will know that I have often said that I had no old photos of my family. That has changed -- my niece has sent me over 100 from an album covering my elder brother's wartime experience in the Fleet Air Arm in the Mediterranean. To my delight I found this:

Now all I have to do is to find out where and when it was taken.

I will share other of my brother's photos when appropriate.

Don't miss the other trains at Sepia Saturday 77
