The Camel Bit Me - Sepia Saturday

Alan's prompt this week is an unknown family group.

I can't claim that my pictures are of unknown groups, but at least they are groups with a family connection.

Bob, Rachel and Amy
This was taken on a quite eventful day. Rachel, in my arms had one arm in a sling after she had fallen of a low stood and suffered a greenstick fracture of her collar bone. Amy, my mother-in-law, appeared in my first Sepia Saturday post here This day out was meant to be a treat until the camel came too close, Rachel let out a scream and cried, "Daddy! The camel bit me."

For the sake of my security I'm not allowed to tell the year in which the photo was taken

I can guess that my next picture was taken at Christmas time and I know the event was in South Wales at either Six Bells or Abertillery.

Bob's Mother (front left)
You can see her again somtime in the early 1980's with two of her daughters-in law.

Iris, Annie and Edna - 1980s
Another  group of my wife's family that I can date, but it may be pre-WWII.

Amy and Bob plus two daughters (we think)
Finally, my wife's Uncle George and two unknown children in Stamford, Lincolnshire, again date unknown.

George Harper
This must be one of the few weeks in which that I have not had to resort to the internet for photos. It makes me realise how easy it is for people, dates and places to be forgotten when you look at family photos that are a lot less than 100 years old.

For other unknowns and takes on family groups cross over to Sepia-saturday-165.

Love the story of Rachel and the camel. We have a daughter named Rachel also. Like you, I am always glad I have a family photo to display. Great post.

What a fine selection of family photos! The camel story was funny.

It is so important to label the backs (or fronts) of photos, but we think that we will never forget. Maybe we won't, but those who come after us won't have a clue.

Sadly I have only a couple of photos of me and my family from many years ago. Someone was supposed to mail the family albums to me from the UK when my mother died (she was here at the time) but they never did.

Poor Rachel!!

I think I have no photos over 100 years old, but have no clue to dates on most of my own...well, within a decade because of children's ages, or where they were taken. I'm slowly scanning all of them though, and trying to date them.

Poor Rachel. First the fall, then the scary camel. Hope she survived all those traumas.

I love your photos. I treasure the realistic glimpse into days of old over the posed photos that were so common. Thank you!

I know the people in my small collection of family photos, but I wish I knew more about the dates and locations.

Judging by that mouthful of straw, I bet the camel viewed your daughter as a tasty dessert!

Nice family and they were all unknown to me!

My favorite is the three gals: Iris, Annie and Edna. They remind me of Aunts of mine.

The camel's got a crush on Rachel :) Love the story. I especially like the photo of Iris, Annie and Edna.

A great collection and I agree with a previous commenter - they were all unknown to me!
The last photo: the youngest girl looks related to Uncle George - similar eyes and face - did he have children?

I love to go through old photos of family members. I am presently going online to the Archives and have come up with my great grandfather and great grandmother's marriage certificate complete with their own hand written signatures!! It somehow links me to them even closer than a photo sometimes.

I love to through old family photos, although lately, I have been going online to the provincial archives and have come across my great grandfather and great grandmother's wedding certificate complete with their own handwritten signatures. Connects me somehow, more than a photo does. Thanks for sharing your family photos Bob.

A nice collection of family photos - and a camel to boot!

I'm glad that you shared some of your own family photos this time Bob. Rachels' cry is amusing but alarming at the same time. How often do small children perceive their fears of what might happen as an actual event that has taken place. I hope she wasn't too traumatised - unlike my son, who was told that the cocatoo might bite and decided to see if it was true by poking his finger in the cage...silly boy!

Yes I agree how easy to lose family information, even for more recent photos.

I think the answer, Bob, is to always have a camel included in the photo as one never forgets anything then.

Gosh, if a camel bit a child now it would be headline news and the parents would sue the zoo for not having a warning sign! LOL

It makes me realise how important it is to go through and label all my photos..even the digital ones.

That camel photo reminds me of a nightmare I used to have as a small child, still vivid after all these years. Instead of a camel, it was a large antelope with huge horns, and the fence was instead a rope and post one, only a couple of feet high ... I could never get away fast enough.

Good gracious, it appears from the look of things that your Uncle George was married to my mother. Well hello Cousin Bob.

Bob Scotney said...

@Tony - Not W Yorkshire, but South Wales, Six Bells was a mining village.

@Jackie - Uncle George was childless as far as I know,

@Brett - you have reminded me of my younger son at another zoo. He had no shirt on and a giraffe wrapped its tongue around him.

@Alan - I've been Uncle Bob and Bob's Your Uncle but never Cousin Bob before.

It's sad that so very many family photos are not only undated but unnamed too. I have some that I think I really ought to know, but don't. I suppose I should name all the more recent ones but this is the problem - it's quite a chore.

Camel - a horse designed by a committee. All slobber.

Six Bells 3 O'Clock, 7 O'Clock or 11 O'Clock.

Isn't it great to have so many photos showing good times for the family.

If I had known I'd be eventually joining SS, I wouldn't have disposed of so many old pictures when I closed home for my parents years ago. But I took a quick look and so many meant absolutely nothing to me, no sense of recognition whatsoever. And my eye wasn't as keen back then to notice some details. Now, I mostly have pictures of people I know, and from my own lifetime, I've often disposed of pictures involving my exes and other people who left my life. Not the most sentimental, am I? I've enjoyed your post, but one thing: pity that pic from the 1980s couldn't be properly enlarged. I would have love to examine those row houses in the background. They gave a certain flair to the pic.

Just think, if youtube had been around you could have made a video called "The Camel Bit Me" and been years ahead of "Charlie Bit Me."

I'm guessing, unlike the boy in "Charlie Bit Me" your daughter had enough sense to not stick her body part back in the camel's mouth.
