Sunday Stamps II A-Z 'Y' - Yugoslavia, USA

A-Z has got harder the nearer we have got to 'Z', it seems that I was in my youth when we started - now I need some support for 'Y'

USA - 1 May 1968

A country that has seen turbulent times is - 

Yugoslavia - 1 April 1959

This stamp depicting the Jablanica Dam is from a series of stamps of dams along with an architectural theme which also included in 1961 - 

Ckonje, Macedonia

The Republic of Macedonia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. The river may be the Vivar but I have still to verify that.

Sunday Stamps II A-Z 'X' Mexico, Brazil, Denmark

I could only find stamps from two countries with an 'X' in their name so had to extend my search as you will see.

Mexico - 26 October 1963
100th Anniversary of the Red Cross

Maybe that cross in not an X but it was the nearest I could get.

Searching for names with an X in them led me to Brazil.

Brazil - 1954 Luis Alves del Lima e Silva
Duke of Caxias

The Duke earned the 'title' of Peacemaker, and his birthday became the date on which Brazil honours its soldiers.

In 1969 Denmark commemorated the 100th anniversary of writer -

But the nearest I could get to an X on a stamp was provided by the 700th anniversary of the Fall of the Dannebrog from Heaven.

Denmark - 12 June 1969

The Dannebrog, the Flag of the Danes, is believed to be one of the oldest flags in the world. You may read about the history of the flag and the legend behind it at The History_of_the_Flag where you will find the X waving at you.

Sunday Stamps II A-Z 'W' - French West Africa, Wales

I really struggled with this letter so much so that I got quite wild. So it seemed natural to look for something different. Eventually I came up with not one but two - 

Wildebeest

Not being able to find stamps from the states of Wisconsin or Wyoming I settled for a President's wife.

Martha Washington

I did not think Senegal would come to my rescue until I realise it used to be one of the colonies making up -

French West Africa

I have got so used to looking at stamps from Great Britain I forgot that we have a 'W' on our doorstep.

Sunday Stamps II A-Z 'V' - Vietnam and ...

At this time of year people have set new resolutions. At the end of 1962 the country of Vietnam had just started its First 5 Year Plan.

But my favourite Vietnamese stamp is from 1961 - 

Vietnam - Sun Bear

As bears like honey I wonder whether they would like these from a country that used to be Upper Volta.

Sunday Stamps II A-Z 'U' - Uganda, Uruguay

As we get towards the end of the alphabet it seems to be getting harder each week. However I've managed to maintain a link back to 'T'.

Uganda, Kenya, Tanganyika - 1 June 1954

The Owen Falls Dam, later named Nalubaale, is on the White Nile in Uganda near the city of Jinja, 4 kilometres from the point at which the river leaves Lake Victoria.

Switching continents now to South America, 17 June 1966 saw the issue of a stamp commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Engineers.

Christmas at Sunday Stamps

I've discovered that I have Christmas stamps from over 15 countries, but don't worry I'll not show them all - just follow the A-Z theme.

Where better to start with Australia and an island which was named on Christmas Day 1643.

Christmas Island - Australia 

Each year I get Christmas greetings from a friend and former colleague who lives in Denmark. She never forgets to add a Christmas seal to the envelope with her card.

The stamp that accompanied this seal shows the public library and cultural centre at the European Capital of Culture in 2017.

Aarhus - Denmark
