Landscapes - Thematic Photography

My last thematic post before Christmas finished in a farmer's field with this load of -

Muck
However this field also provides some landscape views to be admired, even on a winter's day.

North Yorkshire Moors
The pylon detracts from the view a bit as does a modern

Mobile phone mast
If you know the area then you probably also know that the column on the skyline is a monument commemorating Captain Cook.

Following on, to the left again, gives a view of Roseberry Topping and -

Two of the five wind turbines, all in a line
A farm sits on another boundary to the field.

Further on houses are tucked among some trees.

However I must admit I prefer the landscapes to be seen, earlier in the year.

At haymaking time.
I hope you will agree that this a good collection for just one field that I see at least six days a week.

Here's wishing you all a Happy New Thematic-Photographic-394 Year.

Childhood Memories - Thematic Photography

As I'm in my second childhood and my memory is not what it was, Carmi's theme this week has caused me some problems.

I've shown the house where I was born on more than one occasion.

100 High Street, Ketton
That stone wall didn't exist back then and there was another empty building behind it to the left, Our front had a double grey gate and a grey wooden fence; a rose-bedecked trellis lined the drive where box hedge is on the right. There where no hatched white lines on the road, just one line down the middle.

The traffic island didn't exist either; although this is main road from Stamford to Leicester, during the late 1940s it was safe enough to use it as a football field - with a tennis ball of course.

The oldest photo I have of me is aged 12 in Stamford School boxing team.

Just in case you cannot recognise me:-

My pastimes in my second childhood include watching and counting the birds in our garden and photographing them when I'm quick enough. Some just pose.

Wood Pigeon at the birdbath - 24 January 2015
even during the RSPB's Great Garden Bird Watch.

My wife says I'm playing when I'm out with my camera and uploading what I've taken to my computer. Here's one I took yesterday.

Not only do I play with Thematic Photography I also take part in Sepia Saturday. This week this involves me playing with some poster memories of my time in Stavanger.

QEII visiting Stavanger - July 1980
The structure on the left is the topside deck for the Statfjord 'B' platform under construction at Rosenberg Verft where I was working. I was too small to be seen in the photo and regret to this day never having a camera with me to take my own photos - not that I would have been allowed on the helicopter from which the shot was taken.

However my second childhood memory has been good enough to find the souvenir poster we were given.

Power - Thematic Photography

I was surprised how many of my photos would fit the 'Power' theme although that was not the reason for taking them.

The latest that have come to my attention stand at least four miles away with the North Yorks Moors behind them.

Wind Turbines
The eagle-eyed among you may just make out the line of pylons part of the electricity power grid. Just to make it easier for you here is a shot of the moors to the right of the turbine photo.

Power Pylon backed by North Yorkshire Moors
As an example of power in use I just have to include a shot from our lounge.

Electric fire in use
Of course there are different forms of power; one of the earliest can be seen here.

Horsepower on Saltburn Beach
It's also possible to generate power using the waves, but beware that sometimes water takes control.

Waves from the Fowey Estuary in Cornwall very much in charge
River barrages, like the ones on the River Tees enable control to be regain of tidal waters as you can see here when the river is in flood and the flow to the sea is controlled.

One gate of the River Tees Barrage
No power shoot would be complete without a reference to the motor car. Of course the petrol companies try to get in on the act in their advertising campaigns,

V-Power Performance Fuels
For which they charge extra of course.

Missing from this power collection is nuclear power so there is a note to myself to go out a take a shot of our local nuclear power station at nearby Hartlepool.

When all else fails there are times when

Only Manpower Works
Not forgetting the woman behind the camera and behind the wheel.

The Driving Force - power on!
To see other power uses (and misuses?) check in with Carmi at Thematic-photographic-268.
