Postal Union Congress - Sunday Stamps

I recently acquired, from my favourite market stall again, a set of stamps first issued on 10 May 1929.

King George V - Postal Union Congress, London 1929
The Congress is the main meeting of the Universal Postage Union which is normally held at every four years. 1929 was the only time it has been held in the UK.

Issues covered at that meeting were the approval of postal paid franking and the establishment of the first airmail regulations.

A £1 stamp was issued at the same time,

As this is valued at £550 by Stanley Gibbons in the used condition I don't expect to see one on my market stall.

Post - Sunday Stamps

On a previous postal theme I put up this stamp from Iceland.

Iceland - Universal Postal Union
I must have been blind at the time, not to see the stamp right next to it.
Iceland - UPU centenary 1974
I have also discovered some Italian stamps of a design that seem to be issued every year in different denominations.

Italy (2009 issues)
I like the way the design gives the illusion of post 'speeding' on its way.
Italy - Priority Post
I wonder whether this helps to get them there quicker.

Postal Services - Sunday Stamps

As I am on holiday in the USA this is what I prepared in advance for this week's theme.

Iceland - UPU Anniversary
Last week when admiring wild animals on stamps from South Africa another of their stamps caught my eye.

Republic of South Africa - Mail Coach
This set me looking for similar stamps - and led me to this;-

Sweden - Mail Coach
which was issued in 1971. It shows an oil painting from 1928 by E Schwab which is now in the Postal Museum in Stockholm.

If you look closely you will see the posthorn signal used by many countries on their stamps so it seems appropriate to include a video.

I may have trouble taking part for the next three weeks - it depends what I can find in my daughter's albums.

I will however check in as you should at Sunday-stamps-136.

Postage - Sunday Stamps

1949 saw the 25th Anniversary of the Universal Postage Union for which Great Britain issued a set of four stamps - 2.1/2d blue; 5d violet, 6d purple; 1s brown. I only have one of these:

Universal Postage Union - 1949
For the hundredth anniversary of Sir Rowland Hill, the postal reformer, there was a set of four multicoloured stamps - again I have only one, that of the man himself. The set contained 10p Sir Rowland Hill; 11p General Post c 1839; 13p London Post c 1839; 15p Uniform Postage 1840.

Centenary of death of Sir Rowland Hill
I was disappointed that I do not have anything relating to stamps themselves but did find some post boxes. I just don't know their year of issue (hope someone can tell me.)

Christmas Post
Thanks to the postmark showing a postcode I know my last stamp was sent from Teesside in 2002.

Postbox
I must say I thing the colour on this stamp is a bit on the pale side.

Universal Postage Union - Sunday Stamps

Last week I put up a first day cover and this week I discovered another that I had forgotten.

Universal Postage Union Centenary 1974
The four stamps issued on 12 June 1974 show methods of transport which have played a part in overseas mail in the hundred years, 1874 - 1974.
  • 3.1/2p - The P&O packet steamer of 1888
  • 5.1/2p - The first official air mail flight from London to Paris at the time of the Coronation of George V in 1911.
  • 8p - An Imperial Airways flying boat of 1937 which was later used on the England-Australia service.
  • 10p -The blue air mail van and posting box first seen in London in 1930.
