The exploits of Norse explorer Leif Erikson are known through Icelandic sagas of the 13th century.
He's believed to have reached North America c. !000AD and landed at Baffin Island. Labrador and Newfoundland.
Earth Hour, when we are encouraged to switch of all lights for an hour from 8.30pm each year, was begun in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and has spread around the world.
Earth Day is an event celebrated on 22 April with events held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It has been held since 1970. The United Nations General Assembly declared 2008 as the International Year of Planet Earth to increase awareness of the importance of Earth sciences for the advancement of sustainable development. UNESCO was designated as the lead agency. The Year's activities spanned the three years 2006-2009.
I wonder how many of us recognise the events commemorated by these stamps.

its nice to see the earth day is gaining more and more significance, the general awareness seems to grow, alas with this speed we might be too late...a bow to australia for coming up with the earth hour
I didn't know Leif Erikson.
Somewhat like Erikson, you've taken us around the world with this post.
The Erokson stamp is one of my favorites, I think it is a very unusual design compared to a typical US stamp of the time.
Yes you wouldn't argue with an orangutan if it pulled the plug out:) I like Greece's underwater view.
I love the Earth hour stamps!
I agree with Joy, you just don't argue with an orangutan - a good way to motivate people :D
Earth Hour is observed here in Macedonia as well, however, often it feels more like a chance for people and institutions to 'brag' on social media how they are so aware and conscious about the issue, while those same people and institutions totally 'forget' about it the rest of the year
Leif Erickson doesn't get enough attention in this part of the world.
Australia is such an amusing country!
