I knew immediately I could match this week's prompt.
The background of a larger shot where people, including a woman and a sailor, are walking away from the camera.
This photo with the woman walking away towards a group of sailors comes from a wartime photo of a band either welcoming home an aircraft carrier, or maybe serenading one about to depart to war.
I prefer the welcome home scenario.
I also wonder whether that is the band of the Royal Marines?
Unfortunately my elder brother who served on carriers with the Fleet Air Arm during WWII is no longer alive to identify the occasion or the location for me.
I also wonder whether this is another photo taken from a different position on the same day.
This looks much more like a welcome home occasion far different to this action shot.

I think that sailor must be related to Popeye! Too funny. You did a pretty good job matching it up, as well as your other photos too.

I couldn't help thinki9ng how much better the composition of the first photograph would look with some careful cropping off of parts of the right side and bottom.

I think we were ships passing in the night on this theme, Bob. It certainly looks like the band of the Royal Marines with their distinctive hats. I'd guess it was a public day for regular folk to take a tour of the ship, which suggests peace time to me.
Mike, you are probably right. That would make in post 1945.
I was hoping that someone would tell me the Marines came from Portsmouth.
I don't think anyone will match the theme as well as you.
Those were very old pix were they not. The things we have lived through.
Excellent photos for the theme...and I think it wasn't going anywhere either...with women on deck all over the place...and I can imagine the marching band playing...not "Nice Girls Love a Sailor" however!

A great match to theme. Isn't it frustrating to not be able to check the story behind a photo. I wouldn't like to have been a sailor during wartime, either navy or merchant marine.
