Liverpool & Manchester Railway - Sunday Stamps

I couldn't resist this souvenir envelope when I saw it this week.

The stamps were issued on March 12 1980 to commemorate the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.

The five se-tenant stamps show:
  • The Rocket in its original design and livery
  • The first and second class carriages
  • The third class carriage and a two level cattle truck
  • The first ever rail drive - a truck carrying its owner's horse box
  • A tarpaulin-covered truck for general merchandise with a Post Office Mail van and guard at the rear.
Of course the mixture of passengers and freight was never used; actual trains were one or the other.

To see what others have chosen this week just follow the links at Viridian's Sunday-stamps-160,

Oh I have one of those, I think we must have sent for it 'off the cornflakes', notice the Kelloggs logo on the cancellation. :)

I've gone with trains this week too. This is one of my favourite sets, I love the amazing amount of detail and the story it tells as the train rolls against the backgrounds which are all different parts of the line. I think I remember it was one of David Gentleman's designs.

Great set. Quite a variety of different cars. At first, I thought it looked like a circus train with the animals.

I don't think I'd be ale to resist this set either! Though, the rooster on the cancellation is a bit confusing, the details in each stamp are interesting to see.

Hi Bob ... re Scotney Castle ... not sure if you saw the Restoration Man programme last night - it was a repeat ...

But the oast houses they were doing up were part of the Scotney Castle estate before it was handed over to the National Trust .. it was on BBC4 - thought you might be interested ..
