Frequently things in the foreground get in the way of what you want to shoot. There are times however when they may enhance a photo accidentally, or deliberately if you choose.
In this series of shots I had not intended to include the flag.

The course is located at the Homestead, the freshwater resort on Lake Michigan.

Those of you who have read the story of Mishe-Mokwa, the bear who tried to save her cubs from a fire by swimming with them across Lake Michigan, will know that the great spirit Manitou raised the two drowned cubs out of the deep blue waters of the lake - and made them into the islands which he named after himself.
There are times however when what is in the foreground is worth including, like this next shot also from Michigan.

When observing the developments in a wood during a year, the item in the foreground is sometimes an important element to study.

Nice shots
Funny...I learned by accident that sometimes the foreground is more interesting, since I use a point and shoot, and it often decides what it wants to focus on.
You did well to keep everything in focus with these, too, Bob. Sometimes you can make the foreground frame a shot such as a view through a window of a ruin or a scene viewed through a gap in a hedge and it cahnges the whole image having a frame that is not rectangular.
I had to check, but having visited Manitoulin Island I wasn`t sure about its relationship to Michigan. I didn`t realise they were that close or that there was on island on the US side of the border.
Great contrast in the last two, with the foreground shoot and the leaves.
Is that a golf course with ski lifts?

I know what you mean about getting shots of things you hadn't really focused on, and sometimes they are my best ever. I really like your dreamy photo of Traverse City, Mi it's where my junior and senior high school boyfriend lives! Sure brings back memories for me!
Golf courses are great places for cameras, even if (especially if!) the game isn't going well for one.
