Bridging - Sepia Saturday on Sunday

I had wanted to write about the centenary of Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge  but had trouble with copyright issues on the old photos, so I'll post some of my 'modern' ones instead.

To see old photos of this iconic bridge  you can follow this link: Remember When.

You get some idea of how the Transporter can dominate the skyline from these shots taken from the RSPB reserve at Saltholme some distance from the northern bank of the River Tees.

While searching the web for suitable bridge shots I came across this from Boston, USA. I hope it's a first for

I really find the Steroscopic photos and using the viewer to bring the photo out to its 3-D beauty kind of magical for the time it was produced...it's alo quite amusing how expensive these cards and even at times the viewer are so darn expensive...really? Why not just let the world share in the stunning photos (haven't seen one yet that wasn't of the greatest reason for taking the photo in the first place! Great bridge this transporter, I'll have to google this and learn more about it! Thanks Bob!

I expect to see that Transporter Bridge in some children's cartoon waging battle with transformers. It's amazing.

This is so interesting. Never saw it before, thought, to try to get on this bridge would be futile...until I got it...

What an amazing bridge the Transporter Bridge is; it looks as though it is free standing. I didn't realise that '3-D' photos were around way back when. Very interesting.

@Ticklebear; Thanks for pointing out the link failure. The Remember When link has been repaired.

The photos I wanted to use were not on creative commons.

Hi Bob!

Great bridges. Bridge building is fascinating, isn't it? I really enjoyed the sepia one in Boston too.

Have a wonderful week, and thanks so much for visiting!

The Transporter Bridge is very interesting. Is it a bridge that raises and lowers? I ask because in the first photo it doesn't look like there's a connection in the middle (a place to cross) at the lowest level... It's a stunning color of blue!

Being from Massachusetts, I must admit the stereoscopic shot was my favorite. Thanks for that!

I didn't understand how this worked until I found some videos on YouTube that show how it works.

Nancy, if you google the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge you will find videos of it working. Cars can drive onto a cradle suspended from the superstructure you see in my photos. Cars and pedestrians are carried over the river in the cradle who is suspended above the water.

I seem to recall seeing one of these near Newport, but not as impressive as this one.

Bob Scotney said...

Dakotaboo; The transporter bridge at Newport is 5 years older than Middlesbrough's; refurbished in the 1990s Newport is one of the three working transporters in the world.
