Journey Into Space - Sunday Stamps

It was back in 1957 that the Russians astonished the world with the launch of Sputnik. It was Britain's Jodrell Bank radio telescope that alerted the world to its presence.

At the time neither the Russians nor the Americans had the technology to track rockets in space.

The earliest Russian space stamp in my albums is this from 1966:

I was disappointed to find that I had no stamps from the USA to commemorate Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon in 1969. I've had to settle for one from Dominica instead.

I nearly chose the Jodrell Bank stamp for today. Great minds think alike so they say :)

I remember what a big deal Sputnik was back in 1957. I think I made some sort of model of it for a science project.

Wow - great stamps, Bob! I don't have any stamps on Neil Armstrong's moonwalk. I hadn't heard of PoGOLite, too, so I dug around for info. Thanks for visiting and enjoy your Sunday :)

I'm hoping to go to Jodrell Bank this year, they have a new centre opening. The dish is such an iconic sight.

Did they not make one or is it you just don't have one. I am not sure if I ever had seen one. Sometimes they do a stamp 25 years later.

I remember the Jodrell Bank stamp well, and I remember seeing Jodrell Bank itself too. That was probably still during my days of wanting to be an astronomer.

Larry, I'm trying to keep my stamp posts to those that I have in my albums. In some cases this is going to restrict what I can show/say. There are stamps put up by others who contribute that I don't have.
Joy/Sheila - I worked quite close to Jodrell Bank at the beginning of the 1990s - now I wish I had taken more interest at the time.

Thanks for participating, Bob! I did not know the importance of Jodrell Bank.
