Sunset - Sunday Stamps II

I have only one sunset to show and that's on the largest of the Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

USA - Hagatna Bay - 1 June 2007
It features a photo by Michael S Yamashita. Hagatna is the capital of Guam.

The only other stamp in my collection that carries a sun does not really meet the theme this week, but nevertheless I will include it.

Hungary - 9 May 1963
This and the other 11 in the set appear to be space related but actually they commemorated the Conference of Postal Ministers of Socialist Countries.

As you can see the centre 'stamp' represents Shqiperia, aka Albania.

To see the sun rise or set elsewhere please visit Sunday-Stamps-II-62.

As a last minute idea I could not resist adding a stamp from the 'Land of the Rising Sun.'

Japan - 9 October 2014

Far From Home - Thematic Photography

I've had to raid my archives again from the pre-digital era, 1980 in fact.

Father and daughter on the harbour wall - Heraklion, Crete
Heraklion
Heraklion is the capital of the Greek island of Crete.

The photographer was not aware of the passerby that muscled in on the next shot.

Despite staying in a modern hotel (well modern in 1980) outside Heraklion we seemed to spend a lot of time at another establishment.

Villa George on the beach
That's George in the cap on the right. His beer was cheap.

If you ever go to Crete the place to visit is the ruined Palace of Knossos which dates from around 2000BC. My efforts with a camera there were so appalling that I only have one shot 'good enough' to show.

Toreador fresco, Knossos
Of course the sun always sets in places that are far from home.

Cretan sunset
I'm hoping that the skies are as clear tonight so that I can get a shot of something that is really far away  - the Blue Moon of July.

Meanwhile I'll just have to be content with others' places far from home found by following the links at Carmi's Thematic-photographic-343.

Sun-up, Sundown - Thematic Photography

I rushed outside last night to catch a village sunset when I saw Carmi's theme for this week.

Village Sunset
I may have show this sunrise picture before; it was taken in the 1980s in Norway.

Sunrise and Dockside Cranes - Rosenberg Verft, Stavanger
That was a view from my office window.

For the sunset pictures I merely had to step out of my front door in Kirklevington,

Kirklevington Sunset
Now that it's British Summer Time it will be a while before I can have a drink, so for a sundowner you need to cross over to Carmi's Thematic-Photographic-238.

Late - Thematic Photography

Late in the day at my home we occasionally get sunsets like these two shots taken on the same evening:

Ever since I was young I have regarded Japan as the Land of the Rising Sun. I hope that Japan will recover from the current devastation and resume its prominence in the world. Our thoughts are with the Japanese people at this time.
