Sunday Stamps L4 USA

Three from America this week starting with the arrival of Lafayette.

USA - 13 June 1952

Lafayette became a friend of George Washington and fought in many battles of the American Revolutionary War from Brandywine to the Siege of Yorktown before he returned to France and took part in the French Revolution.

Statue of Liberty - 9 April 1954

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the United States. Its framework was built by Gustave Eiffel; the completed statue was dedicated in 1868.

10 September1998 

The first issue of Life Magazine in 1936 had Fort Peck on its cover. This stamp is from the Celebrating the Century series covering the 1930s.

The stamp shows the structure of Fort Peck Dam in Montana.

Statues/Monuments - Sunday Stamps II

Some are world famous like - 

USA - 1 December 2010

I could have shown many others with the Statue of Liberty; above is one side of a block of 10 stamps combined with the Flag.

However the one that stands out for me is the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, equally famous some might say.

USA - 26 January 1974

Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt, chosen to represent respectively the nation's founding, philosophy, unity and expansion, I wonder what this quartet would make of Donald Trump.

I had not heard, I thought, of Mikolaj Kopernik who features on a statue in Warsaw.

Poland - 31 March 1955

Perhaps the globe should have given me a clue to the mathematician and astronomer whose model of the universe who placed the Sun rather than the Earth at its centre. It's Nicolaus Copernicus - the name that I would have recognised.

In Denmark in 2006 I took a series of photos that will also be known to many.

 A stamp was issue to commemorate the 100th anniversary in 2013.

Monuments - Sunday Stamps II

The Albert Memorial was one of a set of stamps of London Landmarks issued on 6 May 1980.

Great Britain

The memorial, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, is situated in Kensington Gardens. It was commissioned by Queen Victoria to commemorated her husband, Prince Albert, who died of typhoid in 1861.

My next two stamps have a French connection although they are both from the USA.

USA - 28.8.1945 - US soldiers passing the Arc du Triomphe

The Statue of Liberty appears on many stamps, the one I have chosen to show is the oldest in my collection.

USA - 20.8.47 

A Lockheed Constellation flies over the Statue and the New York skyline - pity the franking has obscured so much.

Liberation - Sunday Stamps

I expected that I would meet this week's theme with ease. It didn't turn out that way and I had to stay with the USA.
