Sunday Stamps - Food: Fruits of Malaysia

 Malaysia issued series of stamps depicting Fruits of Malaysia, I had to resort to Google to convert their Latin names.

Nephelium lappaceum

Not that I was much wiser for this 2002 stamp  when I found out that it is 'rambutan' the fruit from the same tree.

I had better understanding from this 2005 tree/fruit

Averrhoa carambola

This provides the 'star fruit'.

I didn't really need a translation for another from 2002.

Carica papaya

Also known as a 'pawpaw'.

Sunday Stamps - Deep Blue Sea: Greece, Malaysia

 This theme proved more difficult than I expected if only to avoid stamps shown before.

Greece - 28 June 1969

Ship were the subject of the series but there is no missing that blue sea.

In Malaysia it was islands and beaches that caught my eye with a least an under water view in this case.

Out east - Sunday Stamps II

20th March 1896 is regarded as the inaugural date of the modern Chinese postal service for which China issued a 50th anniversary commemorative stamp in 1947.

China - 16 December 1947

The globe and map of China surrounded by a train, a steamer and planes was to show how the world is linked by then modern means of communication.

Pongo pygmaeus is one of Malaysia's protected animals.

The Borneo orangutan belongs to the only genus of great apes native to Asia. 

Borneo, the third largest island in the world, is divided into three countries - Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia.

As Viridian has given us a free choice this week I've decided to show a set I recently acquired.

Malaysia - Butterflies

Selangor is one of the thirteen states of Malaysia. It's difficult to read the names of the butterflies, even with a magnifying glass. However I have made out the one at the bottom left. 

Precis orithya wallacei is named after Alfred Wallace. Thanks to wikipedia I can add:

Alfred Russel Wallace, OM FRS (8 January 1823 – 7 November 1913) was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist and biologist. He is best known for independently conceiving the theory of evolution through natural selection, which prompted Charles Darwin to publish his own ideas in On the Origin of the Species

A Hemulen's Collection - Sunday Stamps

This week theme of hobbies proved difficult for me until I came across the Hemulens, a species of characters created by the Finnish author Tove Jansson.

Hemulens tend to be obsessive characters devoting themselves to one interest - skiing, stamp collecting, butterflies or whatever. Does anyone recognise themselves?

It may have been a coincidence but in Saturday's Daily Telegraph an article appeared about the author Vladimir Nabokov who wrote 'Lolita.' Apparently Nabokov was an accomplished lepidopterist.

Now I had something to work with. I wouldn't say I am a Hemulen, but I have a butterfly or two.

Of course a lepidopterist is also interested in moths.

Romania - Saturnia pyri

The Saturnia pyri is a native of Europe, but not Britain, and is also known as the Great Peacock Moth or Giant Emperor Moth.

If I wanted to be obsessive about butterflies the one set of stamps I'd like are these from much nearer home.

Shame that I have had to scan them from a catalogue. Oh well, I guess I shall have to remember the Tortoiseshell and Peacock flying round my garden in the summer.
