Railings - Sepia Saturday

It's a long time since I have used all my own photos in a Sepia Saturday post, but I've managed it by choosing to use 'railings' as the link to this week's photo.

The railings in my first picture are the wooden fence at the bottom of the garden when we moved to a new house in Yarm back in the early 1970s and before either ours or next door's garden had been cultivated.
Our youngest son - well behaved for once
I'm surprised that he was not hanging upside down. Earlier in the 1950s it was his future mother's turn to do just that,
Over the top rail on Stamford Recreation Ground

Then there are these 'elegant' shots of my future wife climbing a ladder to the walkway on the top of the pier at St Andrews at the end of the 1950s when I was at University there.
Straight as a die, those stocking seams!
A little less elegant as she reached the top.
Note the railing to the right
The pictures really should have been in colour as I have never forgotten that green 'felt' skirt!

Meanwhile in Copenhagen in 2007 the railings were merely a vantage point.
Copenhagen, Denmark
What was the big, or should I say small and well formed, attraction? None other than -
The Little Mermaid
In 2012 the railings of a local pier were invaded by Olympians.
Saltburn Pier Olympians
Just two of many erected in secret by The Saltburn Yarn Bomber
Before I go off the rails and you begin to rail at me just swing yourself over to see what others have done at Sepia-Saturday-177-18-may-2013 - Bob's birthday.

I remember going to see the Little Mermaid and being so disappointed because she was so tiny and also, when I saw her, there were lots of cranes in the background which kind of spoilt the view. I had forgotten about yarn bombers, never seen the results anywhere.

Hope your wife didn't mind those pictures!!!! Seams on stockings, that was soooo long ago.

Oh my, good to know beware of Bob with his camera when using a ladder! Ha! Ha! This is absolutely a wonderful and delightful post. You have inspired me! I might even put my post in earlier than usual since it seems everyone is following posts earlier than Saturday, and especially when I post as late as Saturday night!

What a wonderful theme, railings! I love your wife's hosiery. Getting those seams straight were crazy.

I trust you've not been railed at by your wife for publishing photos of her nether regions.

great pics Bob. I had a bad encounter with railings when i was a child so they give me a headache whenever i think of them.

I especially like the picture of your wife climbing.

Great photos Bob. Your son look angelic. Your wife does look too well dressed for climbing ladders.

Hope you survive your wife's wrath over that revealing photo (which is a GREAT shot, by the way)! Stockings? It's been a long, long time! Fun post!

Love all these railings but I bet you were in trouble over that shot of the nylon stockings!

I hope your wife did not put a run in her stockings while climbing over the wall.

Ah but Kristin, being England, it would have been a ladder in her stocking.

Shame on you !! You had to marry her after taking photos like that !!

I was going to congratulate your wife on managing to keep her stockings so straight, but I see you beat me to it. I'm glad I came along AFTER seams. You probably set the record for having the most rails and people going over them.

My favorite is of your wife with those stockings! That is so iconic! Does she know you have shared it worldwide now? Why did she have to climb that ladder all dressed up, ????

A good spin on the theme, Bob. But I'm told one must never touch that third rail - the photo that puts someone near and dear in a compromising position. Perhaps your wife will be like mine who often doesn't read my blog until weeks later.

Why, railings! I wonder if nowadays they still produce stockings with seams like those on the pair your wife wore.

Great post! I'm sure you do remember the color of your wife's skirt as you paid a lot of attention to her climbing ahead of you! The yarn bombing was in interesting addition.

So funny! Great pictures; what was your wife after on the other side of that fence? And the ones with the nylon seams.

Loved all your pictures today, Bob.

My Mom used to draw those stocking lines on her legs with eyebrow pencil during the war when they couldn't get "nylons". Great post.

Your wife is the star here Bob! The stocking shots are wonderful, but that Stamford Rec shot is a beauty!

I immediately noticed the stocking seams... before I read your comment about them... No wonder you remember that felt dress...

Nice to see the yarn bombing.
These seemed quite well done,
compared to some I've seen over here.

Reading your post and the comments I became obsessed by the word "railings". Of course it is a familiar word to me, part of my vocabulary, but I had never wondered whether it was a dialect word or not. I wonder from Hazels comment whether it is just a northern expression.

Such an entertaining post and some graet shots. I do like it when people use their own photos. makes it so much more personal. I'm sure your wife will forgive you - her legs were well worth showing off.
