Harbour Views - Sepia Saturday

When I saw the prompt for this week I knew immediately some shots I wished to post.

You could argue that my first two pictures are not coastal views, but at least they are from a Yorkshire seaside town.

Scarborough - Peasholm Glen
At least there is writing on the postcard and , I believe Peasholm is a boating lake even if no boats are in sight.

Scarborough Pleasure Park
There are boats galore here, and a water chute - the bank on the right has seats to view acts at the open air theatre opposite. It looks a lot different today I'm told.

Fowey on the south coast of Cornwall is one of my favourite places to visit.

Fowey - viewed from across the Fowey Estuary
And if you look across the estuary in the other direction this is what you see.

Polruan - viewed from Fowey
But I've had to go to Stavanger in Norway for a shot of a ship of any size.

Royal Yacht Britannia - Stavanger 1980s
The Queen and Prince Philip were on board. I was working at Rosenberg Verft at the time.

On that royal note I'll leave you to check out other voyages and tales at Sepia-Saturday-167.

The Photo Of The Pleasure Park Is A Real Action Shot!I'm not surprised that the photographer kept a safe distance from all that spray!

In any case, your selection of photos are lovely. It's so funny how a photo can appear to be something that it's not don't you think? Maybe that's why I like photographs so much, they are like poems and we each can fix our own thoughts to them. I'm trying something new here, visiting way early. I'm kind of in a blogging slump at the moment. My Sepia brain wants one thing and my I'm in an awful fix about it! I really am in favor of a good mystery- or a spooky ghost tale which you haven't done for ever it seems!

Some of my favourite paces here: Scarborough, Fowey and Polruan. I like the pagodas in the first shot - very oriental.

Dang, I wish that I could have visited Pleasure Park ... train rides, roller coaster on the water ... what a wonderful picture.

I enjoyed the others too.

Peasholm seems strangely out of place in Scarborough

Love the Cornwall pictures, a part of the UK I very much like. Also Stavanger, I was there for a while, not when Britannia was though. She was sold wasn't she?

Lovely photos. Pleasure Park looks interesting and what a beautiful view of Fowey.

The Peasholm Glen postcard reminds me very much of a similar garden in Gisborne (New Zealand). The grandstand at Scarborough Pleasure Park is enormous. You wouldn't think those in the cheap seats could see much of the action.

Jo - The yacht was decommisaioned in 1997, She is now permanently moored as an exhibition ship at Ocean Terminal, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Scarborough Pleasure Park must have been a lot of fun in the summer.

Gorgeous photos. And what nice piece of history. I especially enjoyed the last photo and reading your note below it.

I thought the Scarborough - Peasholm Glen shot was going to be in Japan somewhere.

I am always interested in pictures of Cornwall as the family tradition says our people were from there. Haven't proved it yet but it must be true!

I have heard so much about Scarborough and its pleasure park, seaside etc, so thanks for posting these fascinating shots. I wonder what the modern Scarborough offers the tourists.

There's Scarborough! It's nice to see photos of her in the past. Fowey is beautiful.

The Scarborough Pleasure Park photo is a gem, train, water shoot, rowing boats and to top it off what looks like a fairy castle. I like the optimistic thinking of an open air theatre in England.

There's something about these shots that makes me think of an old ride at Disneyland, the original Disneyland. There was a ride where you sat in a boat with others and slowly glided down a little river past miniature villages, castles, etc. The ride is probably gone because humans don't seem to have the patience for anything so simple and sweet.

Let's hope people always enjoy gliding down real rivers past quaint towns.

Why do postcards of pleasure gardens never show the reality of grey, cold, rainy days with people huddled under their umbrellas? Then when you sent that card you could wish that someone was here instead and you were back home!

Your usual excellent and eclectic collection. I walked through Peesholm Park last year and took some photographs from the same spot as your postcard was taken. Little has changed.

Peasholm Glen definitely looks like a Japanese garden. We have something similar in south Florida called Morikami Gardens which was created by Japanese settlers in the early 1900's in Boynton Beach, FL, absolutely beautiful, tranquil place to go.

Fowey, halfway between Launceston and Penzance (I'm trying to familiarize myself with the geography). Apparently the Dutch hero admiral De Ruyter made an unsuccessfull attempt on Fowey harbour in 1667, but I couldn't find any more info on that matter in Dutch sources.

The Scarborough picture has been niggling me - then I found the exact same postcard view sent to my grandparents in 1962 by their neighbours, who also mentioned an outing to Filey!
