Maps - Sunday Stamps

I believe I have posted stamps from Argentina and Ceylon before which showed maps of these countries. Rather than repeat them I discovered I had others.

United Nations - world map
This is the only UN stamp I have.

A Spanish stamp has not only the a map of Spain but shows Peru and Mexico too.

Spain
I hope someone will be able to tell me what it was issued for - Fifth Centenary of Printing?

India
These stamps showing the Indian sub-continent probably date before the country was partitioned and before Pakistan and Bangladesh existed.

Iceland
There are a number of stamps from Iceland with different maps of the island.

Iceland
Landsimmi is the Icelandic telecommunications company, now called Siminn. In 1906 a telephone cable was laid from Scotland to the Faroe Islands and Iceland. I believe 1956 was the first time that lines reached the whole of Iceland.

Now I am curious, what happened in Segovia in 1472? This is wat google says: "We assume that the first spanish printed book was made in the seventh decade of 15th century: Synodal of Aguilafuente (Segovia, 1472) is prior to Trovas to Virgin Mary (Valencia, 1474)." And: "In 1539, Mexico City came to house the first press in the New World, and Lima acquired a press in 1584". Where would we be without google? (probably sitting in the sun with a cold beer instead of typing behind a pc).

This is a wonderful collection of maps on stamps, Bob! I like all of them - but I like the Spanish one the best. I also really like the relief ma of Iceland - it is really beautiful. It is funny how island nations tend to feature maps on their stamps more regularly than other countries.

Those are really nice maps. I don't think I've seen any of them before.

My favorite is the Spanish one. It is a good design to commemorate printing.

I like the first from Iceland best - it's different!

Apparently the Spanish one is the 5th centenary of the development of printing in the Spanish Empire. This would account for the map showing Mexico and Peru as well.

Thanks to Rob and Nell for explaining about the Spanish stamp.

Great stuff, Bob! These stamps are definitely of great historical value :) I believe the Spanish one refers to the establishment of printers in those cities--the first printer arrived to Spain in 1472, and the first one arrived to Mexico in 1539. Not sure about the Peru one.

Fantastic collection, Bob! I love them all, especially the Spanish stamp which is so olde-worlde, and the first stamp from Iceland that looks like a 3D map. So unique.

Great selection and wonderful designs, the history in stamps is always very interesting once one takes the time to reflect.

I especially like the Iceland relief map makes me think of all those rocks moving around up there. Like everybody else the Spanish map is a gem, empire, maps and printing - a heady combinations:-)
