Sunday Stamps - U4 - USA, United Nations, Utah

The United Nations Charter was signed in June 1945. The United Nations organisation officially came in to existence in October 1945 when the Charter had been ratified.

USA - 25 April 1945
It was 1951 before the UN Postal Administration issued the first UN stamps. In1965 this stamp appeared showing the UN Building in New York.

The 1940s may have seen the birth of the UN, but it also saw a centenary of the State of Utah, commemorated by this stamp.

USA - 24 July 1947
It depicts pioneers first entering the Valley of the Great Salt Lake and deciding ' This is the place."

The place to see other 'U' related stamps this week is Sunday-stamps-u.

In the Pink - Sunday Stamps

I did not have to look far this week as I had stamps to fit the theme from Great Britain and Norway; there were others but I liked these three best.

Great Britain
This was one of the set issued on 16 January 2001 - "Rights of the Child, Face Paintings"

From Norway it is women that were commemorated.

Norway - United Nations Womens' Year 1975
My second stamp from Norway shows a flower but its name is hidden by the postmark.

Norway - 1990

Maps - Sunday Stamps

I believe I have posted stamps from Argentina and Ceylon before which showed maps of these countries. Rather than repeat them I discovered I had others.

United Nations - world map
This is the only UN stamp I have.

A Spanish stamp has not only the a map of Spain but shows Peru and Mexico too.

Spain
I hope someone will be able to tell me what it was issued for - Fifth Centenary of Printing?

India
These stamps showing the Indian sub-continent probably date before the country was partitioned and before Pakistan and Bangladesh existed.

Iceland
There are a number of stamps from Iceland with different maps of the island.

Iceland
Landsimmi is the Icelandic telecommunications company, now called Siminn. In 1906 a telephone cable was laid from Scotland to the Faroe Islands and Iceland. I believe 1956 was the first time that lines reached the whole of Iceland.
