Wild Animals - Sunday Stamps II

After struggling last week, this week couldn't have been more different with so many stamps to choose from.

Africa is a continent with many animals depicted on stamps, some of which I have included before. The King of them all for me is shown on a Malawi stamp from 2011, one of the Big Five.

Not quite as attractive is the animal on stamp from 1954 - head and shoulders only.

South Africa - Warthog
The Czech Republic has many wild animal shots; some smaller one are shown in these stamps from April 1996.

They are from left to right:
  • Eliomys quercinus - Garden Dormouse
  • Dryomys nitedula - Forest Dormouse
  • Spermophilus citellus - European Ground Squirrel
  • Sicista betulina - Northern Birch Mouse

Mammals - Sunday Stamps

I have used many of my animal stamps before and as you might expect a lot of big mammals appeared on stamps from African countries. I'm sure you will recognise these from Benin.

Benin - Lion and African (Cape) Buffalo
The stamps also carry their scientific name - Panthera leo (Lion) and Syncerus caffer caffer (Buffalo).

I had to find out more about Benin and the postmark gave me a clue to the capital city of Cotonou.

These are two stamps from a set of 7 issued on 20 September 1995. The highest denomination (300f) is part of a mini-sheet for Faune Africaine which shows a magnificent elephant.

I acquired two more of the set at the same time.

Benin - Impala and Chimpanzee
Aepyceros melampus and Pan troglodytes are their scientific names.

The International Union of Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species includes the Chimpanzee which ironically is possibly extinct in Benin.

Feeling Reflective - Thematic Photography

I have tried several things this week without success, even experimenting with a reflective shower.

Shower cubicle
On second thoughts that has shown quite enough.

Whereas on our recent visit to Detroit Zoo a lion was well worth a second look.

Detroit Lion
The glass enclosure produced a whiskery effect. It was difficult to get a clear shot that was not reflective in one way or another.

Pensive (reflective) lion
If you remember our recent 'Treaured' theme, perhaps he is pondering why the lioness had the best seat in the house.

On reflection perhaps reflective may take on a different approach. How does losing on a slot machine make you look?
