Peace or Unity - Sunday Stamps II

With the 70th VE Day commemoration this weekend I just had to show some of my favourite stamps.

Great Britain (11 June 1946)
Symbols of Peace and Reconstruction
There was a 3d stamp issued at the same time showing a dove with an olive branch. I have not managed to find one yet.

The Europa, Peace and Freedom theme of 1995 was marked by a set of stamps that included an image of a icon that survived the war unscathed.

St Paul's Cathedral and Searchlights
The Channel Islands were liberated the day after VE Day in 1945. They issued two stamps on 10 May 1948 commemorating the Third Anniversary of the Liberation , sixty-seven years ago today.

These show seaweed being collected; the designs chosen by the King  are based on drawings by J R R Stobie and E Blampied.

That Europa set included a stamp showing the dove of peace. I recently came across the dove on these four stamps from Germany issued in 1947.

This morning there will be a service of commemoration of the 70th anniversary of VE Day at St Paul's Cathedral attended by the Queen.

To see what others have chosen this week just follow the links at Sunday-Stamps-ii-21.

I've never seen the channel islands stamps before, how peaceful they look. VE day was in my mind too!

Hard to imagine what peace must have felt like in 1945. The vintage stamps are striking.

I really like the German stamps, simple but meaningful.

I, too, like the German stamps. Very dramatic in their symbolism.

I remember VE day and the parades everywhere. Nice selection of stamps. Interesting that Bertie chose the designs of the Channel Island ones.

I quite like the first one. The hovering crown looks a bit odd, I've always thought!
And nice to see a German stamp.
You were curious about the 'international' - since it means involving more than one country, it fits. Once you're inside the park you can freely cross the border between the two countries. There is a cairn making the border.

Hi Bob - love the selection of stamps you've got here .. and fascinating to see them collecting seaweed for the crops ... I remember doing that in Cornwall - but in a car!

I enjoyed the Service yesterday and noted a few things of interest ... one of the hymns with English words and German music, then the 'firing of the bells' at the end as the Queen left Westminster Abbey - don't think I'd heard that phrase before or knew what it was ...

Cheers and enjoying the warming week - I hope! Hilary
