Herbert(s) - Sepia Saturday

I have two little Herberts, aka grandsons and a large Herbert to match the theme this week and a transatlantic liner as well.

I can even throw in toys, boys and beds (but no toy boys here)

Youngest grandson with key ring
My eldest grandson is using Bamboo to stand on so that he can see more out of the window.

Oldest grandson and Bamboo
You can see toys abandoned on the floor.

But the largest Herbert of all is being cuddled on his (?) bed.

Herbert with his mistress
The sad part is that Herbert and Bamboo now have no-one left to play with and reside in black bin bags in our loft waiting for someone to rescue them and pay their fares to the USA.

Should they be lucky enough to travel by ocean liner they might even get a cabin to share as this young boy may have done long ago.

Family cabin aboard SS Great Britain.
I hope neither they or he are so sea sick that they need a doctor or Noah's Ark to complete the trip.

To see how others have fared you need to check the links at Sepia-Saturday-196.

Haven't heard the use of the word "Herberts" for years. My dad used to use it all the time when I was young as apparently I was a "right little herbert".

Funny - AFTER our children were grown up & out on their own is when I began collecting really large stuffed bears of all sorts. I've always had a 'thing' for stuffed bears & still have smaller ones. When we moved, however, I had to give the bigger ones away - but to the younger grandchildren so that worked out. When I was young, we weren't allowed to have pets, so my brother & I had these little 3" tall bears with moveable 'arms' & legs which we pretended were real & made 'cages' for them out of cardboard boxes. Later, Mom let us have a couple of those wee little turtles and eventually a goldfish, & when Goldie jumped out of his/her (?) bowl & died, she let us have a parakeet. My own family did a little better with 2 dogs, 5 cats, 7 parakeets, a goldfish (also named Goldie), a white rat, & a hamster. I still have one of those little 3" bears with the moveable 'arms' & legs, though.

That's a word I haven't heard in a while, 'herberts'. I don't think it's used on this side of the pond at all.

Love stuffed toys, these days I have a few WWFund animals, but used to have lots of bigger ones. Not as big as your biggest herbert though. Lovely bear. Can't you smuggle them over in your luggage.

I never heard of "Herbert" used like this before.

I didn't know that Herbert was anything but a boy's name.

Well, that's a new one on me. I've had teddy bear, Pooh Bear, Koala Bear and Janet Bear, but never a herbert. Thanks.

I have never heard the phrase "Herbert" before...interesting...great photo of the SS Great Britain....I have a sneaking suspicion that same ancestors came out on that boat...will have to hunt back through records and check.

Nice Post! I think we called our "friends" teddy bears over here.

Nice to see your own boys, in bed and out, with their toys, as well as the one of your daughter. We have a picture with a giant teddy like that, but he got donated to my last school, where he sits in school uniform in the entrance hall greeting visitors.

Your photography is really excellent, Bob, as is your final chirp. Our eldest son operated on his teddy bear to see what made it growl when he turned it on its tummy.

A fun post. Love Panda being used as a stool. We too are providing storage space in our loft for our daughter's soft toys - even she had too many to pass all onto her own daughter.

What a fun way to meet Herbert! All adorable boys, especially the grandson standing on the Panda stool, Hehehehe, such joy and happiness in each photo.

I loved seeing your family and their favorites. My daughter has so many favorites she can hardly see the bed, haha.

I'm not aware of Herbert being used in Oz - perhaps it'll catch on after this post.
I think your panda is a lot less scary than ScotSue's stuffed hospital panda!

Like the other Aussies here, I have never heard of the term "Herbert".

Love that picture of your grandson standing on the panda.

I find it fun to hear words like Herberts. I've never heard it except as a middle name of oldest son's who is named for his paternal grandfather. We now have a third- grandson.

Looking at the furniture aboard the ship I have to wonder how often that little table slid back and forth, back and forth. Not weighty enough to stay in one place.

Sorry to hear the bears aren't enjoying days of sunshine anymore.
