USA 1900s - Sunday Stamps

As I acquired more stamps while I was in the USA it seemed right to show some more as it is an 'own choice' week.

These are from the Celebrate the Century Series and represent the 1900s.

USA - 1900s
These commemorate

  • The Great Train Robbery - film of 1903
  • The first Crayola crayons form 1903 - they cost 5 cents and the pack contained 8 colours
  • The Pure Food and Drugs Act of 1906 - which prohibited the sale of adulterated or misbranded food
  •  December 12 1903 - the Wright Bros. first aeroplane flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
For stamps chosen by others don't forget to check out Viridian's sunday-stamps-76

A colourful set Bob. What on earth is going on in the 'Pure Food' one though?

A fresh pack of crayola, happy childhood days. What an image for pure food, where did they find that. Great set.

Those are nice designs but the kind of stamp that is hardly ever seen or used. I wouldn't mid having a whole sheet or book of crayola stamps.

These stamps are really sweet. When were they issued? Recently? It would be interesting to see what is chosen for the rest of the century! My favourite is the Crayola. I had no idea the brand had been around that long!

Helen - between 1998 and 2000 ten different sheets were issued, one for each decade of the century. There were 15 stamps on each sheet. I have others but haven't sorted them yet.

The Crayola one is another favourite! Maybe because I can remember that little box of magic colours.

I too am fascinated with the Pure Food one, looks like he's beating something into the ground - a skeleton?

What a fun set of stamps - the Crayola stamp is my favorite. I've never found a crayon that can match Crayola's quality, they are truly the best!

Hi Bob .. loved these - don't they 'tell the time' giving an idea of life back then ... Great Train Robbery .. bandits .. in typical cowboy (Robin Hood) style ..

Those Crayola crayons - I never had any .. but my brothers did I think - and the basic pack hasn't changed since then ...

Then as Little Nell mentions - what happened to Pure Food?

Interesting choices .. cheers Hilary

The Crayola stamp reminds me of this excerpt from Robert Fulghum's book:

Maybe we should develop a Crayola bomb as our next secret weapon. A happiness weapon. A Beauty Bomb. And every time a crisis developed, we would launch one. It would explode high in the air — explode softly — and send thousands, millions, of little parachutes into the air. Floating down to earth — boxes of Crayolas. And we wouldn't go cheap either — not little boxes of eight. Boxes of sixty-four, with the sharpener built right in. With silver and gold and copper, magenta and peace and lime, amber and umber and all the rest. And people would smile and get a little funny look on their faces and cover the world with imagination instead of death. A child who touched one wouldn't have his hand blown off.

-- I've always loved this idea.
