Hold On To Your Hats - Sepia Saturday

I have never understood why so many ladies are fascinated by them - but now I've discover that 'facination' is a collective noun for hats. It must be due to displays like this:

But even I can see the attraction of hats like these:

In my experience hats take different forms and are there for a practical purpose even if the lady is only checking out whether there is garlic in the dishes prepared for a meal.

On a less serious note some horns get in on the hat.

And here's a hat once worn for a wedding, but the wearer is shy so you will have to make do with just the hat.

These days I wear a cap to keep the sun out of my eyes or a bobble hat to keep my head warm when I am playing golf. There must be something wrong with this golfer however:

    See Bob, I'm one of those women who have a fascination with hats! Maybe because when I grew up I always had hats when going away, and those white gloves....everywhere, really...but I don't wear them so much any more, they do mess with a woman's hair you know...but they opened a new Hat store in the Mall of America, but you go in there and the sales people only talk about the recent royal wedding...you remember that one right! You did a very impressive job here, and I'd seriously wear that wedding hat you pictured, possibly where no one knew me...but I'd buy it! Great hats off to you post!

    I’m not a hat person myself (except to keep the sun off or at weddings), but this is a great selection. As ususal you’ve taken the theme and run with it in your own creative way. Well done.

    I think the only hat I can pull off is a beret in winter and a wide brim sun hat in summer, but only at the beach. Fun take on the topic. I like that wedding hat with the fancy bow. Very 1960s.

    There is a lot more current interest in hats than I realized before I started looking at millinery stuff this week. I always think of England as a hat place and the U.S. as a no hat place.

    I often wish that we lived in the 1930s when no outfit- male or female- was complete without a hat. I'm a great hat fan myself and I love how you covered the topic!

    I'd like to hear more about the pink hat. What year did its owner wear it and did the hat match her dress/suit? Did she wear white or pink gloves and what color were her shoes. From my memory I can fish out hats similar to that one, but not the details of when or where. Thanks for sharing your photographic collection of hats.

    I'm also a person who looks very bad in hats, but as I've gotten older...well, just plain old, I now have the attitude of "whatever." I wear hats when I need to no matter how stupid I look. I've become one of "those" women.

    @Nancy - the year was 2002 when the daughter of our friends' got married in Germany. The dress matched, of course, but neither of us remember the shoes which do not appear in any photo of the event. Due to the recent deaths of both our friends I feel I cannot include photos which would answer your question

    Growing up Catholic of course I had to wear a hat or head covering everytime I went to church. It was just a normal part of your wardrobe. I love to make my own. Just take an old basic and add things to it. But when The Boss said no more hats I was ready for that. Nice post. Well done.

    I was here yesterday but I am retracing my steps because of Blogger's hiccuping causing me to vanish... tonite I am accessing through Google Chrome.. As I said yesterday, I love the rack with all those lovely colored hats. I have many hats but don't wear them...and I remember seeing that Longhorn hat guy sometime in the past..

    Of course hats originally were practical means to keep us warm and over time they became more for fashion, then for nothing at all. What may I ask is a bobble hat?

    @whowerethey; a bobble hat is the name given to a wollen hat, also called a beanie. At one time they had a pom-pom or bobble on top, hence the name.
