Guernsey, Jersey & the Isle of Man |
Guernsey and Jersey are in the Channel Islands between England and France. A bailiwick is a territory governed by a baliff. Both Guernsey and Jersey are bailiwicks, each covering a collection of smaller Channel Islands.
The Isle of Man is situated in the Irish Sea between the United Kingdom and Ireland. The island's parliament, called the Tynwald, is said to be the world's oldest continuous parliament dating from AD 979, or earlier. Its symbol shown on its stamps is a triskelion - three legs joined at the thigh. The triskelion is reflected in the island's Latin motto, 'Quocunque jeceris stabit,' or 'whichever way you throw it, it will stand.'

Hi Bob ... I love seeing the pictures of your stamps .. and the history behind the Isle of Man's Triskelion .. great picture.
ReplyDeleteBailiwick of Guernsey I see ... and other fascinating information pictorially represented ..
Hope your weather is as nice as ours is down here?
Cheers Hilary
Guernsey is an alien name of a place for me...first time to hear it.
ReplyDeleteNow I am curious on how a man w/ three legs can walk/run... Just my imaginative mind! Have a great week ahead!
I always like the Isle of Man stamps but like you only have a few.
ReplyDeleteNice examples of the stamps, I'd never thought about the meaning of 'Balliwick', so thanks for that, now all I need is for it to come up in some cryptic crossword ;)
ReplyDeleteI have several stamp cards from Guernsey - but none of these. I rather like the little soldier. :)
ReplyDeletegreat stamps - thanks for participating. More Europe next week!
ReplyDeleteThanks for an informative post. I didn't know where those islands were, and never even heard of a triskelion
ReplyDeleteFascinating Bob, shows things we do not normally notice.
ReplyDeleteI've never quite been able to get my head round the Triskelion - in fact the example you show makes me feel decidedly uncomfortable.
Very exotic, for us, stamps and lands!
ReplyDeleteYou wrote twice balliwick, but I'm sure you wanted to write bailiwick. :)
Fascinating history!
i always found the triskelion to be a fascinating emblem. to see it here enlarged makes me even more appreciative of the details.
ReplyDelete:)~

ReplyDeleteThanks for pointing out my typos; my eyes ('is') are not what they used to be! No excuse really as it's clear enough on the stamps.
