Orange or Yellow - Sunday Stamps II

Colours are not always what they seem to be.

The earliest 'yellow' in my collection is the Golden Jubilee issue for Queen Victoria of January 1,1887.

Great Britain
The Stanley Gibbons catalogue describes this as purple 0n yellow.

On May 5, 1937 the first 15 definitives for George VI were issued and included a 2d orange stamp.

6 February, 1952 saw the issue of the Wilding definitives for Queen Elizabeth II. The lowest denomination of 1/2d is described as orange-red.

I had to wait until 25 February 1976 for a Machin derivative in a colour to meet the theme - 10.1/2p yellow.

The capital of Gambia was founded by the British in 1816, before the reign of Queen Victoria began and of course well before the first postage stamps. Founded as a trade post or base to suppress the slave trade it was named after the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, the 3rd Earl of Bathurst.

In 1966 (on 24th June) a set of stamps commemorated the founding of Bathurst.

Gambia
Bathurst was renamed Banjul in 1973.

This is an orange or yellow post for Sunday-Stamps-II-93. Don't forget to check the links there for other contributions.

Fruits and Nuts - Sunday Stamps II

I thought I might miss out this week being away from home with nothing to match the theme in either mine or my daughter's albums.

However a visit to a Michigan post office saved the day with these recent issues.

USA
I guess sweet corn is the odd one out except that we eat corn on the cob. I know there is a cob nut so I claim an association at least.

Dog of the Week

Scout is my daughter's senior dog, if you can call him 'senior' with his eighth birthday in a few weeks time. He doesn't like having his picture taken and will move away if you point a camera at him; he almost runs when it clicks.

Scout
"Put that camera away! Grr."

Dirty - Thematic Photography

When it's time to paint the deck there comes a stage when equipment gets dirty.

Paint tray
Of course four dogs must be kept off until the paint dries.

A dirty trellis bars the way
Gardeners too need to clear up after themselves not just hide tools in a convenient corner.

Someone will get some stick if they do not clean it up. However this is not the sort of stick needed.

Worshipful Places - Sunday Stamps II

There are many churches in England dedicated to St Andrew, two of which appeared on stamps for British Architecture - Village Churches issued on 21 June 1972

Great Britain - St Andrews, Letheringsett, Norfolk
This is one of 124 churches in Norfolk with a round tower.

Great Britain - St Andrews, Helpringham, Lincolnshire
Boston, USA not Boston, England is the location of -

USA - The Old North Church, Boston
It's from here that the famous lantern signal 'One if by land, two if by sea' was sent following Paul Revere's midnight ride of April 18, 1775 preceding the Battles of Lexington and Concorde during the American Revolution.

For other worshipful places visit Sunday-Stamps-II-91.

Bird of the Week

Lake Orion saw us on Labor Day, where we thought we saw a statue - until it moved.

But we will never find out whether it was Harry or Henrietta fishing at the bottom of the water cascade.

Disposable - Thematic Photography

Thematic photography themes are more of a challenge for me while I'm in the USA. Nevertheless 'disposable' proved possible at least, especially when you are trying to save on the washing up.

Empty paper plate
I've started raking grass but temperatures over 30C are too hot for me to continue.

To be disposed of
Then there's all the disposables in the fire pit that have accumulated over time.

Fire pit
We need to wait until rain is promised to avoid the risk of setting fire to the wood.

Guess it's time for a rest and -

Coffee and a slice of melon
dispose of the coffee pod and wipe up with the kitchen roll.

For more disposables check out what others have had to say at Carmi's thematic-photographic-383.

Road Signs _ Thematic Photography

Don't you just hate it when you are told to wait for the tour guide who will be holding a sign and they fail to show up. Packaged tours are not all they are cracked up to be.

The road signs round here are not much use.
Holes to be avoided

Our speed does not register
We fly over it

Mind you we take the hump when it disturbs they disturb the airflow.

We need eyes in the side of our head to know where to go to school
One we ignore
Doesn't apply to us

And remember this is where we come back to next April or May.
