British Conductors - Sunday Stamps

I can claim a faint connection to one of these four British conductors.

From left to right, they are -

  • Sir Henry Wood
  • Sir Thomas Beecham
  • Sir Malcolm Sargent
  • John Barbirolli
I picked up the presentation set  recently, including a PHQ card for each of them.

Sir Henry Wood - PHQ
The four stamps below are in the same order as the first photo.

Great Britain - Music and Conductors
issued 10 September 1980
Sir Henry Wood founded the Promenade Concerts held in the Royal Albert Hall and which are named after him. Of course all four conducted concerts there.

Sir Thomas Beecham's fortune was based on those famous pills advertised as 'worth a guinea a box'. I may have taken a few in my time but that is not the 'connection' I claim.

Sir Malcolm Sargent was brought up in Stamford, Lincolnshire and won a scholarship to Stamford School. Much later so did I, but there the connection ends as no-one could say I am musical at all.

For more musical themes please follow the links at Viridian's Sunday-stamps-173.

I have these ones. I've never thought they were the most inspiring stamps.

I like how their heads stand out from the white drawings of the shirts and suits.

I am not sure what PHQ stands for, but it is a stamp reproduced on a postcard, yes? A good thing to have after all the stamps are used, as mine usually are.
Thank you for joining in this week.

Viridian - PHQ = Postal Headquarters are postcards issued to show designs of commemorative stamps.

I like a lot the combination of colour and b&w in the designs. I have been surprised to discover they date from 1980, they look more modern!

It is nice that the composers' portraits stand out more than the Queen's.

I remember the conductors and I used to go to the proms especially the first and last nights, cannot now quite remember who was conducting at the time, Sargent I think. Interesting stamps. It's nice to see people commemorated.

I;ve just realized that the majority of stamps featured today are related to music instruments, and this one is just about people that are related to music...great choice of stamps!!

Today Royal Mail tends to go for photographs rather than paintings of people on stamps. Nice to go back to the days when they were more inventive, although I like the photographs you have chosen to show their character.
