Sunday Stamps - Out of Africa

With over 40 countries in Africa to chose from this week's theme of stamps from African and the Arabian peninsula made it hard to chose.

The fossil finds in East Africa in recent years have confirmed Darwin theories on the descent of man. Many of the hominid findings have been in this region and that's why I chose to start with stamps from the countries that used to be in British East Africa.
Kenya & Tanganyika
Uhuru means freedom I believe and these stamps were issued in 1963 when the countries became independent.
These counties along with Uganda issued common stamps for a while.
Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania
Tanzania was formed by the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964.
Tunisia
It was the uprising in Tunisia that began what is today being called the Arab Spring.
Egypt
Egypt has thrown out its President too, but it was a kingdom until 1953 with the gentleman on the right, King Farouk in charge.
I was going to show a stamp from Libya too but in the process I discovered that the one stamp I have is not from there but from the Lebanon.
Zambia
I've settled instead for stamps from Zambia. Why?

'Z' ends the alphabet and these stamps are the last in my World Album.

Hi Bob .. brings back memories of my stamp collection and the days of collecting (years ago!) .. and how I learnt so much about the world .. fascinating series to see - I hadn't realised Zanzibar falls under Tanzania now ... did you know Freddie Mercury of Queen came from Zanzibar?

Cheers - Hilary

You do have a good variety there! My father worked in what was then Nyasaland, now Malawi, so I know all the names of these places, but don't have the stamps.

What a nice range of stamps. I am currently reading Paul Theroux's Dark Star Safari where he traverses many of these countries - interesting read!!

terrific stamps, all of them again....especially the colorful ones..extremely bright! ...Out of Africa is one of my favorite movies too, just watched another one with Robert Redford and my first thought during that old flick was I hope they don't kill him in this movie as well, ...well of course they did...he sure loves people crying over him at the end of his movies, doesn't he!!!!

My album is too old to even have Zambia. African countries have changed so much, and I am unfamiliar with most of them.

These brought back so many memories. I must have had a distant relative living in Africa when I was a child as I remember steaming exotic stamps off envelopes and putting them in an album. (I wonder where they are now?)
I got a little sidetracked by Hilary's comment about Freddie Mercury, I had no idea.
